HTTP/2 CONTINUATION Flood DoS

Date: 2024-04-03

HTTP allows for named fields in the header and trailer sections of a message, and HTTP/⁠2 header and trailer field sections are serialized as field blocks to allow for fragmented stream transmission.

A vulnerability within multiple HTTP/⁠2 implementations was discovered by Bartek Nowotarski that does not limit the amount of CONTINUATION frames which can be transmitted in a single stream. Successful exploitation allows for a DoS attack against vulnerable systems.

This HTTP/⁠2 CONTINUATION Flood attack has a more severe impact on a single machine than the previous HTTP/⁠2 Rapid Reset vulnerability.
