Extra glad I was able to stock up on wet food now. Snowed about 10cm's here, so extra wet food for the next little while.
On the plus side, I know the heated bowls definitely work! Plus, I will be able to test with the Original Catnip Whirlpool and Ice Rink.

2026-02-13 Preliminary Results: going to need an extra day to prepare my Silvervine Powder data presentation, but it looks like it is going to be a good day! It is very clearly Dorian's favorite. Once I calculate everything I expect at least 10 minutes of activities at the minimum, 8 of those from just 2 sessions. Euler has less time, but Dorian getting to it first played a part in that.

2026-02-12: Next Test: It looks it will be another wet day, so no official testing, but I am going to do a pretest for Day 3. Day 3 is Silvervine Fruit Powder day on a temporary replacement Catnip Ice Rink. Yesterday's Catnip Whirlpool has been placed next to my door to reduce chance of rain and to dry, allowing the kitties to get a treat if they are interested in the powder.

2026-02-12: Inspector Clouseau: My quest to find something for Inspector Clouseau continues onward. I worry about them all on a rainy day, but I worry especially equally with his long fur. I wonder if he is one of those kitties who likes to chew on things like Lego models? Maybe I should get him a Lego Enterprise-D, let him play with Data? Well, Luckily for bad ideas, that one is outside my price range, and would never leave my desk if I had it.

2026-02-12: Container Test with Catnip: Dorian appeared quite intrigued by the area the included the catnip whirlpool, but never got it in himself. He actually sat on the storage container where the original whirlpool still sits, sniffing at something only he knew about. It is very possible he caught a wif of the final scavenger hunt location, but there is no way to tell. Dorian continues to surprise me when he does something like this.

2026-02-12: Container Test with Catnip: Only Euler and X22 got in it, spending a good amount of time in it, but neither rolled. Sméagol the Raccoon was a tad more active than normal at the same time those two were, so they left earlier than they normally would. Also, any evening tests were canceled after Sméagol knocked the whirlpool over..

2026-02-12: Container Test with Catnip: A tad late for a bit of a soggy day, and my right hand is currently claimed by Penguin, but here is the small report for the day. The rain again reduced the number of visits, but at least one interesting thing has been found. The test for the day was testing a dry catnip whirlpool, with catnip simply sprinkled onto the bottom of the container.

2026-02-10 End of Day Report: As other testing is being done on the 11th, I will continue container and materials testing on the 12th with one of the original ice rinks turned into a whirlpool

2026-02-10 End of Day Report: while the weather continued the Tatarian Honeysuckle delay, the materials tests did a lot better. As mentioned in the prelimiary results, the biggest factor there seems to container itself. All of them are too big for the test pool, but it had more use than the test rink despite the catnip in the rink being more accessible.

In a "I hope the kitties will forgive me for cleaning something" I have decided to do a full reset on the original Catnip Ice Rink and turn it into the a Catnip Whirlpool. The fine mesh appears to be working, but the drawer container just isn't suited for properly whirlpool usage. With how long it has been outside, I don't want to put it in my freezer. Depending on the weather, I will use one of the other identical boxes as an ice whirlpool next week.

2026-02-10 Second Interlude Materials Test: tests are out as of 1am. From left to right in the picture from the link post we have: fine mesh inside a Catnip Whirlpool, sheet of ice to continue Tatarian Honeysuckle test, and a pan with a 2 strips of fine mesh. 1 has catnip underneath the mesh, and 3 has catnip onto of the mesh.

Making some good progress with Dorian today. He stepped away from the shelf, as expected, but towards the #CatnipWhirlpool(west) and not towards the hill(east). He was very well hidden, though, as I didn't see him until I had stepped in side and he had stepped out of the shadow to checkout the moved #CatnipIceRink. #SpookyKittiesFerals

Trash Panda Reefer Madness Testing Protocols Thread 1/: As announced a few days ago, the testing protocols for the catnip/alternatives are being revised due to weather. It has been above 0c 20/24hrs for the last few days, and I expect it will be the same for at least the next few days. Thus, I cannot rely on a #CatnipWhirlpool or #CatnipIceRink freezing outside each night. So, I have decided to freeze a sheet of ice in a pan each day, placing it ouside at midnight. #SpookyKittiesSciences

2026-02-02 #SpookyKittiesSciences: very little to report again, as Trash Panda Reefer Madness creeps ever closer. The #CatnipWhirlpool has again seen no use, which is not a surprise. It was above freezing for 21/24 hours, and the pool has melted. The #CatnipIceRInk has also experienced noticeable melting, but it has yet to melt to a point where any of the #SpookyKittiesFerals would notice while rolling on it.

2026-01-31 #SpookyKittiesSciences: With Trash Panda Reefer Madness materials not scheduled to arrive until the 6th, there isn't much to report. The Original #CatnipWhirlpool had no activity today, despite my continuous addition of catnip to it, and only the catnip addict herself half stepped into the new one(to drink). No one even looked into the original. The #CatnipIceRInk, however, had steady activity. It still mostly a solid block, which I suspect helped

Yeah, my temperature monitor by the feeding station recorded above 0c most of the night, though it was below from 0400 to 0800. Based on the state of the new #CatnipWhirlpool, though, that won’t be enough to keep it frozen enough that the kitties will use it. Still a few days left to see. #SpookyKittiesSciences

Looks like Trash Panda Reefer Madness will start on or around 2026-02-07. I am going to be updating my testing protocols, as it is becoming increasingly unlikely that it will be cold enough to freeze #CatnipWhirlpool's each night. Hoping to have pool lining by then, but the timing on that is out of my control. #SpookyKittiesSciences

2026-01-30 #SpookyKittiesSciences: Looks like Dorian also had the same experience with the new #CatnipWhirlpool, though he still stayed for a good 3 minutes. Now I just need to see if Euler's fluffy tuxedo face did the same thing.

2026-01-30 #SpookyKittiesSciences: Thank you yet again, Euler, for once again showing up to first testings. It seems the new #CatnipWhirlpool is not completely frozen. X22 arrived at the same time, but he only tested to confirm that he does indeed like catnip. All the tests were cut short by the #SpookyKittiesRaccoons. Now suspect that Euler, while having a superior boopable nose, has worse hearing than X22. Or she isn't as afraid of the raccoons. Actually, the later is more likely...

2026-01-30 #SpookyKittiesSciences: Doing a test of a container for a new #CatnipWhirlpool. I have a set of plastic drawers that have been sitting in my kitchen for a long time. I don't use them, but i haven't been able to convince myself to get rid of them. They might be a tad too tall, but we shall see.

At 0000 local time each day, I will bring in each of the boxes to wash. The pools will be have all ice removed, while the rinks will have only the top layer. Each will then be placed back outside, with the 2 #CatnipWhirlpool getting enough water to cover the bottom poured into them, 1 getting the herb of the day sprinkled in to be frozen with the water. Water will be added into the 2 #CatnipIceRink, herb being placed in 1 after it has frozen.

The first thing I will be testing is which of the various herbs each of the #SpookyKittiesFerals like. Each herb will first be tested in a cleaned between each use #CatnipWhirlpool and #CatnipIceRink. Each will be placed where they are now. The rink will be used to determine actual interest, while the pool will determine how attractive it actually is for each cat.

2026-01-29 #SpookyKittiesSciences: The new nip+alternatives have shipped, with the just catnip having arrived today. As the #CatnipWhirlpool is transportable, meaning it can be cleaned and easily restarted, I have put some of the nip in it. I am going to do a proper test with a cleaned pool+just nip later, but this should still answer the question on whether anyone actually likes catnip. I mean, they should, especially Euler. She has shown 0 interest in silvervine.

2026-01-29 #SpookyKittiesSciences 2: To my surprise, no one got in the #CatnipWhirlpool today. Also, the cotton rag was simply stepped around.
Dorian approached the door again, so I think I need to start putting something there to interest him. Perhaps I will put one of the future #CatnipWhirlpool there once all the nip alternatives arrive.
