  1. Squeeeeeeee! The fiddleheads have made an appearance!

So have the catkins on the butternut tree.

    These pics are quite terrible.

    But aren’t they miraculous? 🥰

  2. Spring is in the air, it is on the ground, and it is showing up on winter deciduous trees.

This cluster shows a still leafless Himalayan Birch (Betula alnoides) full of yellow catkins, the other taller trees are Himalayan Alder (Alnus nepalensis) which have new leaves & leaf buds. The dark evergreen trees are Tree Rhododendron (Rhododendron arboreum).

  3. Another shot from Sunday afternoon, in the dene behind Halton Castle, near the hound kennels. Catkins, presumably a hazel tree? 📷

  4. Catkins on a Salix gracilistyla Mount Aso. The catkins are produced in spring before the leaves.
I moved this shrub a couple of years ago from an area, where it was not doing well. It is meant to grow up to three metres tall but is still tiny, probably on account of its hard start in life.

  5. The #seedpods #catkins on #SilkTassel bush look like long dangling earrings, from afar.
Garrya elliptica, the coast silk-tassel or silk tassel bush. It's native to coastal Oregon & California. Many WA & BC landscapers use it for their gardens work - especially as a windbreaker bush.

  6. Should see some pollen from the hazel trees in a week or so if it stays warm. The catkins are expanding fast. Last year there was pollen and bees gathering it for one day and then the wind blew about 50mph and no more pollen.
