Spring is in the air, it is on the ground, and it is showing up on winter deciduous trees.

This cluster shows a still leafless Himalayan Birch (Betula alnoides) full of yellow catkins, the other taller trees are Himalayan Alder (Alnus nepalensis) which have new leaves & leaf buds. The dark evergreen trees are Tree Rhododendron (Rhododendron arboreum).

Catkins on a Salix gracilistyla Mount Aso. The catkins are produced in spring before the leaves.
I moved this shrub a couple of years ago from an area, where it was not doing well. It is meant to grow up to three metres tall but is still tiny, probably on account of its hard start in life.

So,I *took* the photos on #MonochromeMonday lol..I hadn't checked on #aspen #catkins for a couple of weeks- just emerging last time I looked; I knew the cool/snowy weather we had would keep them in suspended animation. It's been warmer for the last week though, a few days into the mid teens C/ even near 20C/68F, so I wondered if they'd matured. Nope! Farther along but still not fully extended/open.. soon though..

I just returned from Moon Base Alpha this morning. This secret Space Force facility, located on the far side of the moon, was originally established by the German Luftwaffe in 1943 with extraterrestrial assistance. In 1945, the American Air Force covertly took control of the base. Renowned scientist and engineer Wernher von Braun played a crucial role by providing vital information that enabled the USAF to secure the base swiftly. With the creation of the Space Force as a new branch of the armed forces, management of the base naturally transitioned to them.
