  1. My dear friend and hero in local activism, Bob Waldrop wrote a book, really a compendium of resources on permaculture, frugal living, gardening, and so much more.

Bob has passed on back in 2019, but I think it is important that he not be forgotten, so I’ve decided to republish his book "iPermie: How to Permaculture your Urban Lifestyle" as a PDF (released under a Creative Commons Non-Commercial share-alike license).

Here's how to download the book: jmb.mx/blog/2025/11/23/republi

  6. Patrick Jordan, who died October 2, embodied the Catholic Worker ethos throughout his life. He moved to New York in 1968 to volunteer, met Dorothy Day, and became editor of The Catholic Worker newspaper. He and his wife Kathleen lived as Day's neighbors on Staten Island until her death in 1980. Jordan went on to edit Commonweal for 28 years, writing powerful editorials on peace and social justice.

  7. "The Eucharist is in the poor." Martha Hennessy, granddaughter of Catholic Worker Movement co-founder Dorothy Day, continues her grandmother's mission of radical Christian discipleship. Day, a candidate for sainthood, co-founded a movement that "took the Sermon on the Mount and Catholic social teaching literally" by feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless.

  9. My journey as a Tottenville historian began as a reporter covering Spanish Camp's demise, where I discovered Dorothy Day had stayed in a summer cottage as retreat from her Catholic Worker ministry. Learning she was baptized at my own parish, Our Lady Help of Christians, changed everything. History became personal.

Dug out my scrapbook of the #Mural we did on the #Tacoma #CatholicWorker Guadalupe House back in 1995

It’s due for a refresh now, but on the shady side of the house so has held up well

    Places I’d like to visit

That’s where the #CatholicWorker archives are too

Not sure what the overlap is, but I know Wisconsin is higher on my tourism list than most places in the US

  13. @ErickaSimone @zombiewarrior
When I lived at the #CatholicWorker (non preachy Christian anarchists where the anarchism is vague and I was pretty much a curious atheist)

I came to think that anarchism functioned best as a critique: “Oppression sucks”

    But you needed a program

    And “I won’t vote” wasn’t much of a program

The Worker fed people and housed people in their home. So that was something

But mostly again part of saying “This sucks”

They tried not to be overwhelmed by hopelessness

  14. @SnowshadowII @ironcladlou @SrRochardBunson
In the 70s at the New York #CatholicWorker soup kitchen they were talking once about what they were going to do when all the elderly bums died?

They’d been feeding people since the 1930s, but not many new folks were living on the streets

Then Reagan got elected, cut taxes and invented modern homelessness

Which journalists had to explain and define for people — it was a new phenomenon

    “Homeless”

    Never forget: #Reagan invented that

  15. @elsantonegro
Good to hear about the #CatholicWorker folks there. Always in the midst of things ✊🏼

  16. Whether or not you made it to last week's reading group kick off, we hope you'll join us tomorrow to discuss the first section of Rebecca Solnit's "A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster." We'll be talking about the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 (pages 13-72) in the context of our own experiences with Hurricane Helene. This is also a cool section because it includes the origin story of the Catholic Worker Movement, a radical faith movement that inspired BeLoved Asheville!

Copies of "A Paradise Built in Hell" are available at Firestorm with a discount, or at no cost for participants in financial distress. We'll also be continuing to provide childcare for kids five and up, so please let us know the names and ages of the young folks you're bringing!

Full event details and schedule can be found at firestorm.coop/events/3290-beh

    That’s where I got my first #Accordion

Which broke in the rain camped out blockading the jail during the WTO demonstrations in Seattle in 1999 ❤️‍🔥🪗

Somewhere there’s probably wonderful media of us playing during the sunny 🌞 Thursday march down towards the jail

I can hardly see it on a pile of wet sleeping bags in the fantastic documentary This Is What Democracy Looks Like (2000)

If they don’t mind (big if I know) radical mixes of anarchism and Catholicism (!?) the #Tacoma #CatholicWorker on the Hilltop is nice

I lived there for 10 years from 1991 to 2002 and we did lots of work welcoming homeless people into our house, Latin American solidarity, community gardening, supporting the local #NeedleExchange, AIDS hospice, LGBTQ, and labour and human-rights organizing

They’re friendly and not pushy (I’m a casual atheist)

    Dorothy Day’s in line

Amusingly a fair number of her followers in the #CatholicWorker movement she helped found aren’t really that into it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Jeff Dietrich at the Los Angeles #CatholicWorker talked about people not needing to go far away or whatever to do “service projects” or charity

Because we have plenty of issues right here at home

But “our” poor people aren’t always nice and thankful

  26. New Catholic Worker org in St. Louis, would love to say hi the next time I'm in town: stlcatholicworker.org/p/about.

After growing up "culturally Catholic" in a sense, my political evolution taught me about Dorothy Day and it's cool to see the movement alive/picking up steam. They are raising money to buy a house in St. Louis to house vulnerable people and establish their community hub: stlcatholicworker.org/2023/12/

  27. This is my new Dorothy Day keychain. It came in the mail this week. Now I get to bring her around with me wherever I go and she can help me remember to be compassionate and caring toward all of God's children and to work for justice everyday!

  28. “What we would like to do is change the world...by crying out unceasingly for the rights of the workers, of the poor, of the destitute. We can throw our pebble in the pond and be confident that its ever widening circle will reach around the world.” - Dorothy Day

  30. Okay, an #introduction
I'm a mostly-lifelong Catholic, recently ordained a Deacon for the Diocese of Burlington, Vermont.
My spirituality leans #Franciscan; my ideology leans #CatholicWorker.
    Also a big #fantasy / #sci-fi
/ #comic book nerd. Majored in #film in college, mostly because I wanted all the Creative Arts and couldn't settle on one, and film seemed like a good umbrella for all of them.
Thirty years later I still haven't made up my mind which to focus on.

  31. G’day. 👋 A Mastodon #introduction : I’m Jarrod, living on Wadjuk Noongar land 🖤💛❤️ (on most maps as Perth, Australia). A decade ago, in the context of interviewing #BillMcKibben about our #climateemergency, he something to me that haunts me still. Bill said we have a responsibility to enjoy what future generations won’t experience in the same way.

    *let that sink in*

So I’ll start with practices for me shaped by this conversation and Dostoyevsky’s words, “Love all God’s creation, both the whole and every grain of sand.” I love talking to the #birds 🦜 and teaching my boys their Noongar names (like Uncle [ ] Garlett taught me). I love #surfing 🏄🏼‍♂️ #hiking#snorking 🪸 #spearfishing 🐠🐬🐟#surfskating (I ride a Holy Toledo #Smoothstar 🛹🏄🏼‍♂️). Kathleen is my beloved. 🥰 The outdoors is literally a religious experience for me. Oh, talking God-bothering, that’s kinda my neurodiverse hyper-fixation: the transfiguring-nonviolent-liberating-love revealed in Jesus.

That’s lead to some award winning nonviolent trouble-making, a popular podcast with Dr Drew Hart (patreon.com/InVerse), and other stuff you can checkout here: jarrodmckenna.com

So let’s collaborate in what John Lewis called, “good trouble”. 😊

  35. #DorothyDay was born #OnThisDay in 1897, co-founding the #CatholicWorker movement; she challenged #capitalism & advocated for a fairer distribution of wealth; if only the rest of the #CatholicChurch had her radical egalitarianism~!
