Well how can you learn if you keep shouting at people who’s trying to help you learn?

#Punch Magazine article from July 1858, "Advice in Hot Weather": "Enter into no arguments with an Irishman".
I did some visibility tonight at the corner near exit 11. Mostly positive beeps/thumbs up, but some thumbs down too. One young man as he passed us burned his wheels and yelled "We don't want a black girl for President!"

In 1978, we had a sitcom where in the opening credits, a rich white guy rides down to the inner city in his limousine and literally picks two black kids playing basketball to take home, and no one found it the least bit creepy, racist, or just plain *skeevy*. 😬

Just got a Police and Crime Commissioner campaign leaflet for someone from the "English Democrats".
Was instantly a bit suspicious. Then read the first line. "There's too much fake diversity and not enough tackling crime".
Ah. You're one of *those* kinds of ENGLISH "democrat" 😒
Today I learned:
"Long time no see" originated in the United States as "a jocular imitation of broken English."
"Long time no see" is similar to the Chinese phrase 好久不 見 (Mandarin traditional), 好 耐 冇 見 (Cantonese), 好久不见 (Mandarin simplified), meaning "haven't seen [you] in a long time", further meaning "we have not seen each other in a long time".
Similarly, "Look-see" is also attributed to Chinese pidgin English by the Oxford English dictionary.
How did I come across this, you may ask?
Because I found myself saying the phrase "No tickee, no shirtee!" to my children, because I grew up hearing it, and never thought anything of it, and thought - maybe I should look that up, because it's probably racist. And it was:
"No ____, no ____" predates the origin of Chinese Pidgin English, but is also a notable example of fabricated pidgin English: (沒 票 沒 襯衣) meaning "If you don't have a laundry receipt, I won't give you your shirts", said to be a fabricated pidgin English inaccurately attributed to the Chinese laundry proprietors.
In 1886, a New York City bill cited this phrase in reference to Chinese-owned dry cleaning establishments.
In 1921 a movie titled "No Tickee No Shirtee" further popularized the saying.
Another famous use of this phrase is "No money, no talk" (冇錢冇得傾 (Cantonese)), which simply means "If you don't have the money, don't try to bargain with me".

Women get used to male delivery personnel ignoring instructions saying "Please knock once and leave it at the door." About half make an excuse in the form of patronizing instructions, like "Pick this bag up carefully because that's where the glass is." What they're really doing is seeing how old and how hot the woman they're delivering for is.
I couldn't figure out why nearly half of all women ignore my instructions, too. This didn't change during the pandemic. Today, I finally realized they all want to know what ethnicity my name belongs to, and how a woman with a non-white-sounding name can afford to leave a good tip.
My own kid had hazel eyes at birth (my two grandfathers have lighter eyes bcuz mixed ancestry, white and Black and white and Filipino). Her eyes are now a darker brown like me and hubby's. But blue? I've never met a Black infant with blue eyes. There's that one cutie pie who got famous like a decade ago for having brilliant blue eyes like a comic character, but otherwise? Not a thing to be asserted as "all babies".
I can't imagine being so intensely isolated from the global majority (cuz POC are the global majority) that you think all babies have blue eyes when they're born and are so confident in it that you write it in your book where one of the main characters is *half indigenous* It pops up in my head from time to time because it's truly SO ABSURD and weird. Like, at best, Black newborns have light brown/hazel eyes.
It's an incredible assumption to make. I was 19/20 the first time I saw a baby with blue eyes despite both their parents having brown eyes. I watched her eyes change to brown as her nanny. It was kind of amazing. Any other babies with blue eyes had blue-eyed parents, but I also only know like 4 people with blue eyes.
Two decades ago I had a tiresome client. One day he brought his weird friend into the studio, "this is John*, he's an American, a born again Christian. Oh and he's a racist. Aren't you John?"
"Yes I am"
I just Googled John. He's still here. Running a Christian school.
*Names may have been changed, or maybe I didn't bother

My wife was just on a business video conference call, something about whatever it is she does, and the team leader says "the blue-eyed solution (slight pause as she heard what she said) the solution for [the project] for American users..."
I was a bit shocked, but ultimately not surprised.

Once after having lunch with my colleague she complimented our black waitress with her knowledge of the Dutch language. I could have slapped her (colleague, not waitress). 🤦♀️ #CasualRacism
