Yesterday marked the first outing of the 52nd Introduction to Caving Course, featuring a traditional introductory trip into a sub-horizontal branch of the Castellana Caves. It was an opportunity to get comfortable moving through a cave passage and navigating a few tight spots. As a reward, participants were treated to a view of the magical formations in one of the most beautiful branches of the Castellana Caves.

Una corretta gestione e prevenzione delle emergenze idrogeologiche fanno parte delle buone pratiche delle amministrazioni pubbliche (o dovrebbero farne parte). Nel 1911, a Castellana Grotte, furono realizzati il complesso delle Gravinelle e del Canalone in Largo Porta Grande per imbrigliare e convogliare, nelle cavità ipogee esistenti, le acque piovane in caso di eventi di pioggia intensa.Lo scopo fu la protezione del centro abitato dalle disastrose alluvioni storiche che, nei secoli (come quelle del 1674, 1741 e 1896), avevano causato ingenti danni e numerose vittime.

Da decenni queste cavità sono monitorate periodicamente dal Gruppo per verificare e comunicare eventuali situazioni critiche..

Proper hydrogeological emergency management and prevention are—or should be—standard best practice for public administrations. In 1911, in Castellana Grotte, the Gravinelle and Canalone complex was built in Largo Porta Grande to channel rainwater into existing underground caves during heavy rainfall events. The goal was to protect the town from the disastrous floods that had caused widespread damage and casualties over the centuries (such as those in 1674, 1741, and 1896).

For decades, the Group has periodically monitored these caves to check for and report any critical situations.
