Share your 5 favorite roleplaying game settings, regardless of system:
1. Forgotten Realms, 1987 Grey Box: Agree with @Tim_Eagon. Pre-Time of Troubles was the best FR. Not too fleshed out.
2. WEG #StarWars, up through the Thrawn Trilogy. Again, not fleshed out, but added some cool stuff.
3. Rokugan, up through Clan War & Return of Fu-Leng. Very cool RPG and CCG setting.
4. Alpha Complex, #Paranoia (WEG).
5. Tie between #CarWars (1980s) and #BattleTech (up through 3067).

Making some car and buggy teams that are very easy to identify as teams. When I play the first game of #Gasslands with people, I want them to be able to quickly ID which cars are in a team.

SJ Games has their 2023 stakeholders report up.
Munchkin still dominates their revenue. Of their top 40 sellers, 18 were munchkin. Only 5 were RPGs, 3 were Car Wars, and the rest (14) are miscellaneous board/card/dice games.
In other news a box of Ogre miniatures is heading to my house today.

Found this monster head at a thrift shop. (No body with it or anything.) Decided to make it my mascot for my #Gasslands arena, turning it into a #burningman style installation.
(Using #meccano and #jenga blocks from a previous thrift trip, popsicle sticks, a caffeine bottle, an old socket, a length of cable, and lots of #hotglue)

I’m a mostly “back in the day” guy. Started playing #D&D as freshman in high school back in 1975. Hung out incessantly at a SF&F bookstore/game shop in Eugene through HS, then worked there for about 4 years, spending most of my earning on…books and games. Then they mostly sat in boxes in my garage for 35+ years until I started lazily cataloging them. #TTRPG #boardgames #TSR #GDW #SJG #Traveller #CarWars #UpFront

44) Although released in 1985, I think it was 1986 that I first bought "Car Wars" (although it might have been 1985). Although touted as an RPG, it was more about building armed and armoured cars, and racing them like Mad Max.

The folks in my industry are today mourning the passing of Klaus Teuber, inventor of Settlers of #Catan
Apparently, that title was formative for a whole lot of people... a whole lot younger than me. When I think "formative", I hark back to the likes of #CosmicEncounter and Steve Jackson's #Illuminati and #CarWars.
I give Settlers full credit for making it big on a lot of mass market shelves after it came to the US in 1996, helping more people find the hobby - but, to be fair, Magic: The Gathering had been sold in those same stores for a couple of years by then, and I believe that paved the way for less "mainstream" titles to get a chance.😏
Mostly, I'm just feeling #old now.😔

Bought Dark Future: Blood Red States because it was down to £4.
It's a PC port of the the #DarkFuture and #CarWars #boardgames, rather than the novels. All that fluff comes in with the intro video, job descriptions, adverts, etc.
Finished "brain in a jar" so far. They set it "30 years in the future"… which is 2025, because original Dark Future was 1990s!
Silly, destructive, and not a bad way to pass some time.

@lumpley The first store where I bought a #ttrpg with my own money was a collectible doll store in a strip mall located not too far from my neighborhood. The nice old lady who owned it was convinced by her college age grandson to carry role playing games. So, she had two big bookcases filled with games from the time.
Over time, I bought #TMNTAndOtherStrangeness, #PalladiumFRPG, #Cyberpunk2013, #CarWars, and #Paranoia from her. She also had #GURPS and a lot of other stuff. It was great!
