CW: Car purchase contemplation and consternation
Considering that the US electric vehicle incentives disappear at the end of the month, we've been looking into the economics of trading in our current gas-powered car for an EV. Unfortunately, even if we make some generous-but plausible assumptions about maintenance and energy costs, it's still basically impossible to justify.
While we are looking at a higher-end EV (a Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited with all-wheel drive), we'd also be trading in a very sporty car (a Hyundai Veloster N with under 20k miles). So this is a reach, perhaps, but it's not entirely an unjustifiable comparison.
Even if we assume all of the following...
- Exceptional energy efficiency out of the EV (5 miles per kWh)
- Our trade in will get valued at the high end of its expected range
- Fuel prices will go up at 6% per year and electricity prices will go up 3% per year
- We do 90% of our charging at home, despite not having access to fast-charging hardware.
- Auto insurance will cost 20% less. This is actually what Progressive quoted us; even a hot hatch gets heavily penalized with insurance premiums.
- Maintenance costs are $0 for the first three years due to Hyundai's complimentary maintenance
- Vehicle registration fees will not change. Note Colorado already imposes surcharges on EVs to offset the loss of fuel tax revenue
- We'll drive 8,000 miles per year, which is up from the roughly 6,000 we currently drive, just to make any per-mile savings more significant.
... we're still looking at it being $10K more expensive over the next decade to trade in our current, nearly-paid-off car for a shiny new EV. With some more realistic assumptions (such as we keep driving only 6K miles per year), the difference quickly soars past $15K. This is also completely ignoring the effects of deprecation.
This kinda sucks! We're not sure if we'd be willing to trade down to the entry-level model of the Ioniq 5 (which might eliminate that cost difference) but we sure wouldn't be happy about it. We know, though, that there are $11,350 in federal and state tax incentives that won't exist if we go car shopping at a later date.
Are there any other considerations we've overlooking here? Is there anything that'd allow us to better justify this kind of purchase? Or is it really just a case of it being unjustifiable spending to trade up to such a nice EV no matter how we try to assess the math?

Would happily take any #UsedCar shopping tips. We are looking for a truck to mainly use on the property and for short trips to town for larger project items (wood, garden stuff, etc)
Buying used makes me nervous but this thing just needs to run at the bare minimum. Looks don't matter. So we're hoping we can find something cheap.

Le fait qu'Amazon soit le 1er site eCommerce à proposer l'achat de voitures neuves sur son site est déjà quelque chose. Mais surtout, le site s'occupe de toute la paperasse (fini l'attente longue chez le concessionnaire avec tous les papiers).

Test drove a 2024 Taycan sedan base.
Damn bro I completely forgot how comfortable driving can be. Taycan just handles potholes and all sorts of road imperfections in Boston so well. The dealer is in Allston, where I try my best to avoid when driving the 911. Because it is just so uncomfortable and nerve wrecking when I get thrown around. Taycan just glides on the road. Train tracks? No problem. I could barely feel it. The ride quality is amazing.
The car is 800 lbs heavier than 911, but it doesn’t feel that way at all. Cornering is awesome. It handled Comm Ave curves great IMO. Not as good as 911 of course, the weight is there, but the driving dynamic is definitely close.
Trunk space. I measured at 6 feet 3 inches with the rear seats folded (passenger seat still reclined) which is more than deep enough to fit my bike inside without taking wheels off. That’s all I’m concerned about.
The look of Taycan. Damn it is the most beautiful EV on the market. And Taycan Cross Turismo? Even better. I love a good looking wagon.
The interior is typical Porsche (of course depends on the options) but it’s simple and a little luxurious (not like screaming at you) with the black leather. Two cup holders in the middle console is something great to have coming from 911. I can also definitely get used to the Heads up display. One thing I really hate is the air conditioning control, which is on a separate screen. But what can I do? All manufacturers are moving in that direction.
First of all, it’s fantastic and fun to drive. Second, the ride quality is excellent. 911 will torture you for driving in Boston, but Taycan won’t. Third, it’s practical. It’s a great GT car.

Got her a 2015 Ford Fusion. It’s got some mileage on it but it runs smooth and not a bad vehicle for a first car.

The center console cover looks like it could do with some attention, and the phone equipment is obsolete. Could probably be removed. Seats seem to be in very good condition for the age and mileage. The navigation is probably worthless (unless it has TMC capability) and the maps are probably frozen in time, unless Audi do a better job than Mercedes-Benz for vehicles of this age.

Now that @adrienne has an EV, it's time for me to up my game! Hoping I can finally get my wife out for a test drive soon. EV6, ID.4 and ARIYA are all on the table. Cleared up one thing this morning - the National Grid discount EV charging program is based on either the car or the charger, so it isn't just the ID.4 that's supported. ARIYA can use Tesla chargers, ID.4 is free charging a Electrify America chargers and the EV6 is an amazing car. Choices choices.
