    I didn't.
No repellent; and in each garden I had one crop of nice carrots, then the following year they were not good.

The standard advice seems to be a low fence of fine netting.

I may try it again, and might use a raised box as well.

    Excerpt: "Store Long-Lasting Crops

Little or no special equipment is required to put these goods away until you want them:

#Apples: Apples keep well for about 6 months at temperatures above freezing but below 45°F. If you don’t have a root cellar, a double cardboard box in a cool basement can approximate the conditions.

#Carrots: After harvesting, remove the green tops and brush off any excess dirt. Put the carrots into a cardboard box and pack dry sand around them. Store the box in a cool basement.

#Onions and #Garlic: Hang mature, dry-skin onion bulbs in a mesh bag in a cool, dry, airy location. Braided onions and garlic can also be hung.

#RootVegetables: If covered with a thick layer of mulch (hay, dried leaves, straw), carrots, garlic, horseradish, leeks, parsley, parsnips, radishes, and turnips can be left in the ground well into the winter and harvested into the spring."

  4. Tornado warning has expired with no drama here, all ok. Before retiring for the day here is a further Update on the pot-o-carrots. They're coming on just fine. Close look shows some good shoulders in there. Will pull a couple soon to check them out. reminder: It's a large planter, about 19 inches in diameter and 15 inches deep, holding about 12 gallons (43 liters) of potting mix. Planted 14 April.

  5. Our #carrots (left too long) have bloomed, to the joy of our local #bees. A pleasant surprise, as I'd never seen a #carrot #flower before.

  6. It's pouring rain outside. Forecast calls for more rains tomorrow. My rain barrels & buckets will be filled well. Sunshine returns on Wednesday.
I'll thinning out this large pot, full of mixed carrots & some self seeded tomatoes, on Wednesday morning before going to work. I wasn't expecting that many carrot seeds to germinate. I used a bag of 3 year old seeds to sow this pot.
I grow all my root vegetables in big pots for easier harvesting. All my yams & potatoes are growing out of large felted bags. I have beetroot & turnips growing together out of a large Rubbermaid bin.

  7. Here's an update on our Pot-O-Carrots that we planted on 14th April. It's a 12 gallon (43 liter) container and it's coming along nicely although on hot, dry days in needs a LOT of watering. Plants are now well established and tops are all at least 12 inches (30cm) tall. Spacing looks good and have done no thinning. Roots are just starting to fill out, so it will be a while yet before harvest.

  8. Planted 4 rows of carrots in the tomato bed today. The basil in here was a bit unruly for getting to the tomatoes since it was left to flower for the insects. The basil sprouts were plucked and put in the tomatillo bed.

  9. I like to cook carrots by simmering them in a covered pot for half an hour with two pats of butter, a quarter cup of brown sugar, a teaspoon of salt, and cold water to cover. They're incredibly delicious.

But yesterday I decided to substitute granulated maple sugar instead of brown sugar.

Big mistake. Nowhere NEAR as good. I won't do that again.

  11. Today’s #dinner was simple, some #soup I made from both shop-bought and home-grown #vegetables, with #potatoes, #carrots, including our own #GarlicChives and #SpringOnions. I added some #GreekYoghurt, a little chopped #Chillies and some #ChineseVinegar to add a bit of tang and it tastes great, particularly with some of my wife’s home-made #Sourdough #FlatBread.
