Another perspective on my recent trip to Carrizo Plain from Lee @ OverlandOutAndAbout. Lee got some good captures of some of the hairier parts of Temblor Ridge Road - my camera had given up the ghost by then, and I was too white-knuckling it to think about using my phone. Worth a watch!

Owl's Clover, Carrizo Plain. I caught the last few seconds of sunlight on this flower patch. This was shot with my 200mm. It's hard to figure out which flowers to focus on, especially since I was racing the last seconds — literally! — of light and had no time to fiddle around with a tripod for a longer exposure. This patch was off Elkton Road.

Carrizo Plain trip a week and a half ago. Spent the night so I could be there for storm clouds at dawn. Soda Lake and starlings. Being there for the nice light was worth miles and miles of liquid-snot mud on the road in.

Carrizo Plain last week. Purple owl clover (Castilleja exserta) has these funny "eyes" and sometimes they line up just right.

Carrizo Plain yesterday at sunset. There are still very large patches of these taller yellow flowers and the low growing "goldfields", as well as purple owl's clover.

OK, I admit it. This is a bit of a “record shot,” considering how this place can look like the peak of the spring bloom in an exceptional year. However, it does give me a chance to write a bit about the location and how I came to be here on this day. I was doing the long drive from the SF Bay Area to Death Valley from the San Francisco Bay Area. Since I had decided to stop overnight in Ridgecrest before continuing to the valley, I had a bit of extra time on the first day’s drive. So I detoured through the Carrizo Plain. The photograph comes from Carrizo Plain National Monument, but it could be anywhere across a wide range of California locations this time of year. Beginning in late winter and extending into early spring, California enters what I call the “impossibly green season.” While much of the state can be brown and dry most of the year, colors near the ned of the wet season are amazing — in the best years and in the right places the wildflower displays are astonishing. A spring cloudburst moves across a Southern California grassland landscape.
At the end of March we detoured though mountains west of the San Joaquin Valley on our way home from Death Valley, looking for grasslands where the spring wildflower bloom was starting. Cloud shadows move across Carrizo Plain and the hills of the Temblor Range.
This year we only had a few hours to visit the Carrizo Plain, where wildflowers emerge for a few weeks in astonishing abundance during wet springs. We extended our Death Valley trip by a day so that we could loop though the National Monument on the way home.
