I have strong opinions on Christmas songs. There are a lot of them that I find absolutely repugnant and annoying. Among them are:
"Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney and Wings - in my book, the most horrible use of a synthesizer in the history of sound. It somehow manages to capture the worst aspects of the winter season, and NONE of the good ones. Basically ice and hypothermia in musical form.
"Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey" by some asshole whose name I'm not going to look up. It's just a Mafia song, for God's sake! "Dominic the Made Donkey" would probably be a more accurate title. And it's incredibly annoying with its cutesy Italian schtick.
"Santa Baby" by far too many people. What could be more heartwarming and appropriate to the season of giving than a whore demanding rewards for what can only be assumed are sexual favors for Santa Claus? How many children have heard this one and wondered what the hell it was about?
There are more horrible Christmas songs, and I'd like to call out "The Polar Express" for being the most blatantly cynical, calculated grab at Christmas classic status in a book or movie while I'm at it. My son literally screamed with horror within the first 10 minutes of the movie when he was a toddler. I hadn't wanted to bring him to see the damned thing in the first place, but his mother and grandmother insisted. So I ended up having to pick him up and run out to the lobby and try to comfort him while they finished watching the movie.
But anyway, those three Christmas songs are the ones that stand out in my head as just the worst.
