Perched with Purpose
This Carolina chickadee perches with an unusually straight posture, and it sports an oddly punk haircut. Both the posture and the uneven head feathers are indicators that the bird is molting. Apparently, the more upright posture may help relieve the pressure from new emerging feathers.

Chickadee in Pink
I was digging through my unpublished archives this morning and found this image of a Carolina chickadee holding a sunflower seed. What caught my eye was the soft flash of color from the crepe myrtle blossoms in the background.

I'm trying to get better at designing a whole sketchbook page. I kinda forgot how fun it was to draw straight onto the paper with ink. The pen is a Stipula fountain pen.

Chickadee with Sunflower Seed
Photographing small birds like the Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) from a distance—especially in shaded conditions—often results in a noisy image once cropping is complete. Fortunately, there are tools available to reduce that noise, though they’re not always perfect.
The challenge with bird photography is timing. You rarely get the luxury of adjusting camera settings on the fly. Opportunities appear suddenly, in fleeting moments, wherever the birds decide to be. You either catch the shot or miss it entirely.

I’ve been posting a lot of photos of Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) lately—there’s no shortage of them around here this year. It’s fascinating to watch them dart in and out of the forest, like punctuation marks in motion.

Is This Seat Taken
I watched this Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) as it approached the little rustic bird feeder shaped like a porch swing. The image catches it mid-arrival, clearly aware of the house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) already perched at the edge.
The chickadee slipped into a narrow spot between the finch and the arm of the swing—just long enough to grab a nut and vanish.
Among feeding birds, finches are what I call grazers. Chickadees? Definitely takeout.

Midair Distraction
Here’s a Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) caught mid-flight. Its head is turned slightly, as if noticing something just beyond the frame—something unseen, but clearly worth a glance. The pose has a comic-book urgency to it. I half expect a cape. Mighty Mouse comes to mind.

Foliage and Featherlines
Okay, what in the world is this? It’s definitely not a crisp image. But it does catch a moment in nature. I was probably focused on a blue jay in the trees, and just as I hit the shutter, it bolted—leaving behind a blur. Still, the foliage came through, and off to the side, a small chickadee held its pose near the flowers. Do I have sharper shots from this morning? Absolutely. But none quite this oddly compelling.

Soft Wings, Sharp Eyes
I wrote this a couple of years ago: Here's a little goggle-eyed Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis)—Carbonero de Carolina in Spanish, Mésange de Caroline in French. Its left eye looks a bit bulging to me, but that’s just an illusion—light catching the glossy surface just right. I try to post new photos of two birds (or other wildlife) every day. It’s been too hot lately to sit outside for long, but thankfully I’ve got a good stash of unused shots to pull from.

In the Seed of the Moment
Here we have a sunflower seed that somehow managed to catch itself a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis). There seem to be more of these lively little birds flitting about than there were last year—proof, perhaps, of a successful mating season or two.

Chickadee’s Dance Among the Branches
This image of a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) is one of my earliest photos of these birds. At the time, I was still learning to handle a camera—honestly, I still am—but, as with everything, I know more now than I did then. My equipment wasn’t quite as advanced either. I believe I used a Canon 90D to capture this shot, though it might have been a Canon Rebel T3. Interestingly, I just looked up that model and found it described as ‘vintage.’ Despite that, the image itself is dynamic—an action shot. I also just noticed something beneath the bird that looks like a crystal, possibly a drop of water shaped by tiny branches.

Carolina Chickadee Duo
Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) have been especially abundant this year. In this image, I captured two perched side by side on a branch—a delightful sight. I’d guess they might be a male and female, but that’s only speculation, as these chickadees are not sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females look nearly identical.
I don't always take great photographs, but when I do, you can find them at:

Purple Haze
There's an out-of-focus tree in the background that adds a purple hue to the photo for some reason. In the foreground, a cute little bibbed bird is perched on a branch. The bird is a Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis). I wonder if it was windy that day because the chickadee's feathers look rather windswept.

Bird Feeder Dash
Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) are "take out artists." They don't stop at the feeder and eat, what they do is stop just long enought to grab what they want, usually a sunflower seed and leave.
I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Chickadee and Sunflower Seed
This would be a much better photograph had I gotten closer. I added a X1.4 Extension to the Sigma 150-600 lens, to get more reach, but when I zoom above 400mm the auto focus gets quirky. That is why I removed the extension a while back. But I want to sit farther away, and the extension increases the focal length to >800mm. I just have to put up with the quirkiness. It does cause me to miss some good moments. In this photo not only is the bird's image not sharp, but there is an aberration on the bird's head top above the small branch. The bird is a Carolina chickadee.

Good morning. 🫠😀😉
27 October 2024
Their living with the dogs. Their living with the cats. The dogs and cats are living in the house of the people who live there.
I got up this morning and the first thing I had to do is cleanup after Charlie. I put my Bissell carpet cleaner to work, but I can't say I was a happy camper. On the bright side, all of that sudden activity woke me up. So now I'm Woke, awake, alert at a level that I'm usually not at this early in the morning. See, there usually is a bright side to things. Whoa ... it is mealtime. Hmmm ... maybe it is me who is living with the dogs who live here. Well, it is also time to relax with coffee.

Take Out
Some bird species like sparrows, finches, and cardinals will stop and graze at the bird feeders. Not Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis), they grab their grub and go. This one grabbed a sunflower.
"In winter, the Carolina Chickadee’s diet is about half plant, half animal. The rest of the year about 80–90 percent of their diet is animal (mostly insects and spiders). Carolina Chickadees glean insects from foliage and tree bark, often hanging upside down to do so. They hold seeds and insects in their feet, wedged against the branch they’re perched on, to peck into them. They readily use bird feeders." - allaboutbirds.org

Monochrome Munch
Here is an image of a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) that I saw in forest behind my home. It was pretty dark among the trees and the chickadee was too far away for a detailed closeup. I like the image anyway and thought maybe displaying it in black and white/selective color would make it more interesting. I think a gold frame will set it off.
I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.
So, I set up an account and website with pixels. My website is:

Forest Dweller
Here is a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) with a forest background.
"John James Audubon named this bird while he was in South Carolina. The curious, intelligent Carolina Chickadee looks very much like a Black-capped Chickadee, with a black cap, black bib, gray wings and back, and whitish underside. Carolina and Black-capped chickadees hybridize in the area where their ranges overlap, but the two species probably diverged more than 2.5 million years ago." - allaboutbirds.org
