🇫🇷 Grand Tour de l'Ouest de la France - Jour 8 - 06 mars 2016

Direction la région Centre et la vallée de la Loire pour entamer le lent retour vers la Belgique.

La matinée est occupée par une découverte de la ville de Rennes, mélangeant les façades à pans de bois et les bâtiments plus moderne et une ultime crêpe pour le repas de midi. (Photo 1)

L'avantage de regarder une carte routière, c'est que l'on risque de découvrir un lieu à visiter qu'on ne verrait probablement pas si l'on se fie uniquement au GPS... Ce fût le cas pour la Roche aux Fées (Photos 2 & 3) site mégalithique situé à proximité de Lion-d'Angers et de Solesmes et son abbaye bénédictine près de Sablé-sur-Sarthe (Photo 4) qui est en quelque sorte la maison-mère de la congrégation bénédictine dite de Solesmes et dont fait partie l'abbaye de Clervaux au G.D. de Luxembourg. En passant là, j'ai découvert l'existence de Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire et de son abbaye où se trouvent les reliques du père du monachisme européen. J'ai failli aussi y laisser mon appareil photo que j'avais oublié dans l'église abbatiale (mais j'ai pu le récupérer immédiatement).

Pour les trois derniers jours, ce sera la vallée de la Loire, le fil conducteur des visites avec, on s'en doute, plusieurs châteaux.

🇬🇧 Great Tour of Western France - Day 8 - March 06, 2016

Leaving Brittany for the Région Centre and the Loire Valley and starting the way back home but not too fast!

In the morning, we visited the city of Rennes, which mixes half-timbered facades and more modern buildings and a last "crêpe" for lunch. (Photo 1)

The advantage of looking at a road map is that you can discover a place to visit that you probably wouldn't see if you rely solely on GPS... This was the case for La Roche aux Fées (Photos 2 & 3), a megalithic site located near Lion-d'Angers and Solesmes and its Benedictine abbey near Sablé-sur-Sarthe (Photo 4) which is in a way the mother house of the Benedictine congregation known as Solesmes congregation (the abbey in Clervaux in the GD of Luxembourg is a part of that congregation). While passing there, I discovered the existence of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire and its abbey where the relics of the father of European monasticism are located. I also almost lost my camera there (but got it back immediately).

For the last three days, the Loire Valley will be our guide and several castles are on the program.

🇫🇷 Grand Tour de l'Ouest de la France - Jour 7 - 05 mars 2016

Ploumanac'h était le point le plus à l'ouest que nous ayons pu atteindre et il fallait penser à repartir vers l'est mais par étapes et en passant par la vallée de la Loire.

Pour ce dernier jour au bord de la mer, plusieurs visites étaient au programme : la fameuse maison entre les rochers à Plougrescant, Tréguier, Kerbors et son allée couverte (et une drache monumentale aussi forte que brève!), le sillon de Talbert (une curiosité géologique naturelle) et pour finir la journée l'abbaye de Beauport avant de faire route vers Rennes pour une ultime nuit en Bretagne.

🇬🇧 Great Tour of Western France - Day 7 - March, 05, 2016

Ploumanac'h was the westernmost point we could reach and now, we had to think going back to the east but not too fast, several stops were already foreseen in the Loire valley.

For this last day at the sea side, several visits were on the program : the famous house between the rocks in Plougrescant, Tréguier, Kerbors and its covered alley (and a monumental rail fall as strong as it was brief!), the Talbert furrow (a geological curiosity) and to end the day, a visit à the Abbey of Beauport before heading towards Rennes for a last night in Brittany;

🇫🇷 Grand Tour de l'Ouest de la France - Jour 5 - 03 mars 2016

De Saint-Malo à Yffiniac en passant par St-Lunaire - Fort-La Latte et le Cap Fréhel

C'est sous une météo mitigée que la visite de Saint-Malo débuta avec le musée maritime et ensuite les remparts (photo 1). Après un bon repas de midi, nous nous enfonçons de plus en plus dans la Bretagne et toujours en suivant le plus possible la côte, nous passons par Saint-Lunaire pour atteindre la pointe du décollé (Photo 2). Les vues sont grandioses et la météo capricieuse est vite oubliée devant la beauté sauvage des lieux visités.

Poursuivant notre route, nous atteignons notre prochaine étape et visite : le Fort La Latte (photo 3) et non loin de là, pour terminer la journée, le cap Fréhel et son phare, car oui, j'aime aussi les phares! 🙂 Là, le vent et la pluie sont plus fort mais qu'importe...

Après cette journée bien remplie, ce sera à Yffiniac que nous passerons la nuit avant de poursuivre le lendemain jusqu'au point le plus à l'ouest pour ce tour : Ploumanac'h.

🇬🇧 From Saint-Malo to Yffiniac via St-Lunaire - Fort-La Latte and Cap Fréhel

A mixed weather to visit Saint-Malo, we started with the maritime museum and thereafter we made the tour of the remparts (photo 1). After a good lunch, our way is going deeper and deeper into Brittany following as much as possible the coast. First stop "La pointe du Décollé" near St-Lunaire (Photo 2). The views are grandiose and the capricious weather is quickly forgotten in front of the wild beauty of the places visited.

Continuing our route, we reach our next stop and visit: Fort La Latte (photo 3) and not far from there, to end the day, the Cap Fréhel and its lighthouse, because yes, I also like lighthouses! 🙂 There, the wind and rain are stronger but that doesn't matter...

We did overnight in Yffiniac before going the next day to the westernmost point for this tour: Ploumanac'h.

🇫🇷 Grand tour de l'Ouest - Jour 3 - Partie 1

1er mars 2016. Arrivé la veille à Caen, la préfecture du Calvados, c'est sous la pluie que s'effectue la visite de la ville. Pour les visites, je me réfère essentiellement au guide vert Michelin. Est-ce que la météo a joué un rôle mais l'image qui m'en reste n'est pas folichonne... Le château et la vue sur la ville (photo 1) valent le détour et la ville possède pas mal d'églises. Après le repas de midi, direction le Mont Saint-Michel qui sera le point de chute pour ce troisième jour. Sur la route, se trouve la localité de Saint-Lô dans le département voisin de la Manche et là aussi, c'est sous la pluie que l'on fait une petite visite qui se limite aux remparts et à une église. Sans doute que si la météo avait été ensoleillée, l'impression qui m'en resterait serait différente. (Photo 2).

Utilisant plutôt une carte routière que le GPS, voilà que je découvre qu'il y a un village qui s'appelle Orval! Pour rappel, Orval, c'est l'abbaye cistercienne à quelques kilomètres de chez moi et à vrai dire, je suis curieux de voir si ce village français aurait un jumelage avec le lieu en Belgique. Il n'en est rien! Pas un chat dans les rues, il pleut toujours... une jolie église ancienne mais même pas un endroit pour boire un café... (photo 3)

Prochaine et dernière étape, le Mont-Saint-Michel et l'hôtel Mercure, destination du jour. J'avais réservé une chambre à très bon prix apparemment car lorsque, après maintes péripéties, j'arrivai à l'hôtel, je constatais le prix du jour 3 fois plus élevé que ce que j'avais payé!

Mais quel mic-mac pour arriver à l'hôtel... En venant de Saint-Lô, juste à l'entrée du village, une barrière ferme l'accès... il faut mettre un code mais je n'en ai pas... idem pour l'autre accès... De guerre lasse, nous nous rendons aux grands parkings et là, nous pouvons avoir quelqu'un par interphonie... qui nous annonce qu'il faut appeler l'hôtel... qui nous donnera un code facturé à 4 EUR et à usage unique! Armé du code, nous arrivons enfin à l'hôtel!

Les journées sont encore assez courte mais nous décidons de faire la balade jusqu'au Mont-Saint-Michel. Et pour finir ce billet, ma toute première photo du Mont-Saint-Michel! (Photo 4).

🇬🇧 March 1, 2016. Arriving the evening before in Caen, capital city of Department of Calvados. The next day we started with a visit of the city under a standing rain... Most of the time, I always take advice in Michelin's "Green Guide". The castle and the view on the city (photo 1) are worth the detour and the city has quite a few churches. Though, my general feeling is mixed. After lunch, we're heading the "Mont Saint-Michel" which will be the destination for this third day. On the way we stopped in Saint-Lô in the neighboring department of La Manche and there too, it's raining... It will be a short visit limited to the remparts and a church. My feelings were also mixed but maybe it would be worth to visit the city again under the sun... (Photo 2).

Using a map has an advantage on GPS, we can see things the GPS would not show. So, I saw there was a village called Orval, just like the place in my region where the well known abbey is located. I was curious if there was some partnership between the two places but once again, a little deception was the result... The village is very small but has a pretty old church... And it's still raining and there's no one in the streets... And there is no place to drink a coffee... (photo 3).

Well, let's go then to the Mont-Saint-Michel then, everything was fine until we arrived at a gate... We need a code but I don't have one, and there was no mention of it when I reserved the hotel... Talking about the hotel, I was almost shocked when I saw the day's price for a night, it was 3 times more than the price I paid when I reserved! Well a good bargain as Mercure hotels are quite comfortable.

So, we moved to the other access to the village and there we faced the same gate but not possibility to join someone! We decided to try at the great parking lot where, finally, we could talked over the interphone to someone who told us we had to call the hotel to get a code, each code can be used once and costs 4 EUR! Well, we called the hotel and finally could pass the gate with the expensive code!

The days are still short but we wanted to get to the Mont before dinner. There is ma very first photo of the Mont-Saint-Michel (Photo 4).

Tonight, I'll show a few photos of the Mont-Saint-Michel by night.
