  1. Hello, DEV Community!

My name is Modesta Otieno, and I'm on a journey to become a software developer.

My journey into technology started with an interest in ICT. As I learned more about computers and technology, I became interested in understanding how applications are built and how software can solve real-world problems.

That curiosity led me to explore programming.

    Taking My First Steps

Starting software development has been an exciting learning experience. There are new concepts to understand, errors to investigate, and challenges that sometimes take time to solve.

I began learning programming fundamentals and exploring languages such as Go, C, and JavaScript. I also started learning how HTML and CSS are used to build websites.

As I continued learning, I discovered that software development involves much more than writing code. It requires problem-solving, patience, logical thinking, collaboration, and a willingness to keep learning.

    Learning by Building

I believe the best way to grow as a developer is to put knowledge into practice.

Instead of only studying concepts, I started working on projects that would help me understand how different technologies fit together.

Some of the projects I have explored include a Smart Electoral Integrity System, a smart irrigation solution developed during a hackathon, and my personal developer portfolio.

Each project has given me a different opportunity to learn, experiment, and improve.

    My Experience at Zone01 Kisumu

My software development journey also involves learning through practical challenges at Zone01 Kisumu.

Working through programming exercises has encouraged me to think carefully, investigate errors, and understand problems before jumping into solutions.

I'm still learning, but every challenge gives me an opportunity to become better.

    Why I'm Sharing My Journey

I want to use DEV.to to document my progress honestly.

I'll share the projects I build, the mistakes I make, the technical challenges I encounter, and the lessons I learn along the way.

I also hope my journey encourages more women and beginners who are interested in technology to take that first step. You don't need to know everything before you begin.

You can learn one concept, solve one problem, and build one project at a time.

    What Comes Next?

I'll be sharing more about my journey into Go, my Smart Electoral Integrity System, my experience at the AXIS Green Economy Hackathon, and the process of building my developer portfolio.

This is only the beginning, and I'm excited to see how far this journey takes me.

If you're also learning software development, what first inspired you to start?

Let's connect, share our experiences, and grow together!

  3. 🤣 Oh, look! Another tale of a clueless techie who thought a German internship would just be a career stepping stone, only to return home wearing #lederhosen and #yodeling more than the locals. 🚀 Spoiler: One internship and he's more German than bratwurst! 😂

  11. It has been a busy day of research, but I finally made some solid decisions.

The biggest update is that I purchased a new laptop! I went with the ASUS Vivobook 15 featuring an i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD.Has anyone used this laptop, and if so, how did you find it? Tomorrow is all about getting Windows installed and set up. Now I just have to weigh up whether I put JAWS or NVDA on it as my primary screen reader.
I'd be interested hearing the pros and cons of each.
I have also been focusing heavily on my health, transitioning into a lazy keto and lower-carb way of eating. Navigating affordable food options that work with my texture preferences is tricky, and I am working through a few adjustment side effects, but it feels like the right path.

Alongside that, I spent time mapping out study and career options. I am looking into short courses and qualifications to see what best supports my goal of moving into mental health coaching and counselling roles.

To balance out all the serious planning, my children have gifted me a beautiful high tea for Monday week. We are doing the savoury menu, and figuring out how to enjoy a treat while staying mindful of my health goals has been a nice change of pace.

    Feeling tired, but productive.

  14. Heard about the #kagi #linkedin translator and gave it a try (I've left LI years ago). Here's my text and the #kagi output - bang on and a great laugh

My text: due to cut downs I had to choose between going back to my old and lesser paid job or to leave the company. So I guess i'll go back to where I startarted 8 years ago

Kagi linked in translator: I’m excited to share that I’m embarking on a new chapter by returning to my roots! 🚀

Due to recent organizational restructuring, I had the opportunity to reflect on my journey. I’ve decided to transition back to the role where it all began for me 8 years ago. While it’s a shift from my most recent position, I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to bring my seasoned expertise back to a foundational area of the business.

Growth isn't always linear, and I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the core of what I love while continuing to contribute to the company's success. Onward and upward! #CareerJourney #InternalMobility #GrowthMindset #NewBeginnings

  15. Your job search may not end where you expect—and that’s exactly what makes it meaningful. In this thoughtful piece by Joseph Ortenzi, the process of looking for work is reframed as a journey of discovery, adaptation, and personal growth rather than just a race to submit applications.

  16. Quick aside for anyone curious.

Alongside the overlanding videos and trip planning, I’ve started publishing a memoir in chapters. It’s very much a prequel: where I came from, what shaped me, and how I ended up doing… well, all of this.

Totally optional reading. The truck, the maps, and the dirt roads are still the main event. But some journeys start a long way before the trailhead.

  17. Some of you know me from Command & Conquer and the Westwood years. Others from much earlier 8-bit games like Nodes of Yesod.

I’ve just published Chapter 1 of a memoir I’m serializing. It’s the prequel to all of that: council estates in Yorkshire, class and accents, coal fires, and a school chemistry experiment involving an extremely unstable compound.

This is the “whence.” How it all came to pass, long before any of it was obvious.

  20. Three years ago, I was at a crossroads.

I already had my CCIE Routing & Switching for quite some time, and I was asking myself the big question: what’s next?
DevNet? CCIE Security? I started exploring both… but something kept pulling me towards one thing: design. The kind of work where you don’t just make networks run, you make them make sense.

    So I went all-in.

I poured every spare hour into the CCDE path, starting with the written exam (400-007). In June 2024 I passed the CCDE Written in Las Vegas and thought, right, now it’s “just” the practical.

I knew the practical would be tough.
I did not expect it to take a year and a half of my life.

Early mornings. Most weekends. A few nights every week with the study group.
And, if I’m being brutally honest, a lot of it was time borrowed from my family. Time they graciously sacrificed with me, even when it wasn’t fun, even when it dragged on.

But today… I walked into the Cisco office in London knowing it was the day.
Almost 7 hours exam (yes, I finished a bit early). Then, I waited. Waited. And waited. In the end, the email arrived.

“𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗖𝗗𝗘 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 (𝗖𝗖𝗗𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱𝟬𝟬𝟲𝟰)”

I’m proud. I’m relieved. And I’m genuinely grateful.

To my study group: you kept me accountable when motivation wasn’t enough.
To my family: you carried a chunk of this journey with me.
To everyone who’s grinding through something big right now: keep going, but don’t forget why you started.

    Now… I’m going to take a breath. Then I’ll decide what’s next. 🙂

  33. Global Health Otherwise interviews Reda Sadki

Global Health Otherwise (GHO), an informal network spearheaded by Dr Luchuo Engelbert Bain, aims to “critically dissect the meanings of decolonization of global health practice, research, and funding”.  GHO spoke to The Geneva Learning Foundation’s Reda Sadki.

Please tell us about yourself and your area of specialization in global health

I am the founder and president of the Geneva Learning Foundation, a Swiss non-profit research-and-development organization and “think-and-do” tank. I have over two decades of experience in forging multi-disciplinary teams to invent and execute new ways to lead change through learning.

My research and practice have explored the significance of learning and leadership to achieve impact, driven by my conviction that education is a powerful philosophy for change in the Digital Age.

What does it take to make a great career in your area of expertise?

Success requires understanding that most significant learning contributing to improved performance takes place outside formal training, through informal and incidental learning between peers.

One must be willing to challenge conventional approaches and experiment with new models that leverage digital networks while maintaining human connections. It’s essential to stay curious, embrace complexity, and focus on enabling real-world impact rather than just knowledge transfer.

What are the key challenges in your field, and how can these be overcome?

    Key challenges include:

    • Traditional top-down approaches that fail to reach scale or drive sustainable change
    • Disconnect between global expertise and local realities
    • Limited resources and access in low- and middle-income countries

    These can be overcome through:

    • Peer learning networks that connect practitioners across boundaries
    • Digital platforms that enable massive participation while maintaining quality
    • Focus on intrinsic motivation rather than external incentives
    • Emphasis on local action and contextual solutions

In your view, what needs to change in your main area of interest, and how should we approach this?

The field of global health learning needs to move beyond conventional training approaches to embrace more dynamic, networked models that empower local practitioners. We need to:

    • Recognize health workers as knowledge creators, not just recipients
    • Leverage digital tools to enable peer learning at scale
    • Focus on supporting locally-led change rather than imposing solutions
    • Build learning cultures that foster continuous improvement

Can you share any real-world example success stories of your work?

A notable success was the COVID-19 Peer Hub, which connected over 6,000 health professionals from 86 countries to share strategies for maintaining immunization services during the pandemic.

Within three months, a third of participants had implemented recovery plans. The Movement for Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030) has grown to over 16,000 members across 100+ countries, demonstrating the power of peer learning to drive change.

What advice would you give to policymakers and practitioners dealing with these issues?

    • Invest in digital infrastructure that enables peer learning
    • Trust and empower local health workers as agents of change
    • Design for scale from the start
    • Focus on creating conditions for learning rather than controlling outcomes
    • Embrace complexity and uncertainty rather than seeking simple solutions

What do you think the future holds for the specific global health issue?

The future of global health learning will increasingly rely on networked approaches that blend formal and informal learning.

Digital platforms will continue to evolve, enabling more sophisticated forms of collaboration and knowledge sharing. Success will depend on our ability to support locally-led innovation while maintaining connections across geographic and institutional boundaries.

Any final thoughts you’d like to share with the younger generation of practitioners aspiring to get into this area of work?

For aspiring practitioners: Don’t be constrained by traditional models. The most powerful learning often happens through peer connections and real-world problem-solving.

Focus on building networks and communities that can support continuous learning and adaptation. Remember that in today’s complex world, no one person or institution has all the answers – success comes from our ability to learn and evolve together.
