  1. Carbon trading multiplies domination:
"It's not really a carbon trading problem. It's an issue with the land rights that haven't been agreed first."

"Protecting one forest area can push logging, agriculture, clearing into another location."

  2. ”When our rewilding program started, many big corporations offered us huge amounts of money if we certified carbon credits. We consulted with communities. But our answer was that we don’t sell nature.”

  3. I posted earlier about carbon offsets being the most cost-effective climate action — despite their well-documented flaws. The New Climate just published an expanded version with the full analysis, which is a vote of confidence in the numbers.

Why it matters: I'm building TheCoin, which makes offsetting free. This argument is why it's the most important thing I can do for the climate.

  4. Aleya does everything she can to avoid emissions, and when she absolutely has no choice to use polluting technologies, she offsets it. We think that's a pretty great approach to being carbon neutral/negative - and so Christina and I are pretty pleased to announce that we're making a monthly donation to trees.org/ to do what we can to walk the walk besides just talking the talk.

We like trees.org because in addition to planting a variety of fruit trees, the organization works with their partners in farming communities to upskill in agroecology and sustainable methods for thoughtful land management. Our donation has an impact on creating a sustainable future, not just through planting trees, but by helping people actively build that future in their present.

By joining our Patreon, you are helping us contribute to this positive world-making project - we're starting small at first, as we want our donation to be sustainable for years to come, and we'll be revising it pretty much monthly based on our numbers. It's not much, but it's doing what we can with what we have.

  5. Food Banks Are Getting Into the Controversial Carbon Credit Business

Eight to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions come from food wasted somewhere along its journey from farm to table. When that organic waste ends up in a landfill, it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, as it slowly decomposes. Food banks can help prevent food waste from occurring by rescuing unsold food from grocers and retailers and redistributing it to families and…

  6. Carbon offsets: not a great idea in the first place, hypes greenwashing, and gets more expensive over time.

  8. #EU exploring weaker 2040 climate goal

The European Commission wants to keep a 90 percent #emissions-cutting target but to change how countries calculate their progress.

The options being discussed range from allowing countries to defer steeper cuts to letting them count carbon reductions they pay for in other countries. Another idea would be to lean more on carbon that forests or technology can remove from the air."

  9. Top #climate standard-setter responds to carbon credit backlash

"Long-awaited guidance advises companies to rely primarily on cutting their own emissions, rather than buying offsets."

The Science Based Target initiative, or #SBTi , explicitly says that #CarbonOffsets is BS.

  10. "I started studying carbon offsets 20 years ago studying problems with protocols and programs. Here I am, 20 years later having the same conversation. We need an alternative process. The offset market is broken."

  11. @markhburton there can be no ethical jet fuel. #Biofuels are by definition grown on land fit to grow human food, in a world in which many humans face food shortage or worse. Flying jets on biofuels will cause famine.

All #CarbonOffsets are knowing and deliberate fraud.

We just have to stop flying.

  12. Companies remain committed to net zero emissions despite challenges. Organizations like Microsoft and Walmart have faced setbacks, leading them to scale back some of their goals. Here's why: #climatechange #COP29 #carbonoffsets theconversation.com/companies-

  13. "Less than 16% of the #CarbonCredits issued to the investigated projects constitute real #emission reductions, with 11% for cookstoves, 16% for SF6 destruction, 25% for avoided deforestation, 68% for HFC-23 abatement, and no statistically significant emission reductions from wind power and improved forest management projects. Carbon crediting mechanisms need to be reformed fundamentally to meaningfully contribute to climate change mitigation."
