  1. While I was remembering #FDotM scribblings from last November, Primus Canis himself was making new ones:

  12. Heat pumps are amazing; fugitive emissions from refrigerant gases not so much. Making them with magnets & special metals instead is possible, but hasn't been practical so far. This may be changing. ameslab.gov/news/the-future-of

Interesting, but reasoning here: "We assumed, if a device weighs about the same, the cost will be about the same in mass production." seems a bit of a leap, and the embedded emissions aspect for those different materials is similar, I would assume.

  13. Company I work for has significant new product release. They are promoting it on LinkedIn which is, to be fair, where the potential customers for such a product are much more likely to see it, but in case anyone here happens to be interested in carbon accounting service for their supply chain ... opteraclimate.com/next-gen-sup

  14. Research: Australian human-induced native forest regeneration carbon offset projects have limited impact on changes in woody vegetation cover and carbon removals.

Poor integrity carbon offsets actually enables fossil fuel projects to increase emissions under current #SafeguardMechanism policy settings which allows unlimited offset credits to meet set targets.

  15. And I think that probably, petrol companies are going the first to signal this, because they are the ones that have it more difficult, but I bet an arm that the rest are going to do the same.

  16. Shell abandons 2035 emissions target and weakens 2030 goal carbonbrief.org/shell-abandons

I had little doubts that something like this was going to happen. As we approach the target years, companies are going to shy away from their carbon reduction targets and they are going to kick the can down the road —again.

  17. Interesting analysis of ocean traffic! theverge.com/2024/1/3/24018797. Not covered in The Verge's piece but mentioned in the published papers conclusion section: "Our data can also help to quantify the scale of greenhouse gas emissions from vessel traffic and offshore development,"

  18. That sound you hear is of corporations HUSTLING to put in place their #CarbonAccounting and #ClimateRisk departments.

The SEC is not far behind California.
I look forward to seeing those rankings. A "carbon fact" on product labels would be nice, like "nutrition facts" on food labels.

  20. Banks trying to weasel out of their responsibility for carbon emissions in their #MoneyPipeline

"The majority of #banks comprising an industry working group backed a plan earlier this month to exclude two-thirds of the #emissions linked to their #CapitalMarkets businesses from being attributed to them in #CarbonAccounting.

The working group's members are Morgan Stanley, Barclays, Bank of America, Citigroup, HSBC, BNP Paribas, NatWest, and Standard Chartered"

'Macron said the new mechanism would address a current issue with carbon credit schemes where countries like Gabon with relatively untouched forests are not compensated as well as deforested countries that are planting new trees.

"It's a bit absurd," he said.'

Yes, it's quite absurd that you could be paid for deforest and plant again after some years, but not for manage sustainably. Just because the former is additional.

  22. Accuracy at risk as governments reject specialist forest mapping tools
    phys.org/news/2023-02-accuracy
"Our study highlights many of the satellite-based global maps offered over the last decade are not used by sovereign nations monitoring and reporting forest carbon fluxes to the Climate Change Convention."
My guess it that most of the governments doesn't have the expertise to really understand and use those tools. Perhaps not that bad.

  23. @tscriado @ecologies I discuss the use of hands to show the manual work involved in corporate #CarbonAccounting in doi.org/10.1016/j.geoforum.201

But, of course, that is quite far removed from the work of Ende Gelände. On the latter I note some papers in "Forschungsjournal Soziale Bewegungen"; and, beyond German language, dx.doi.org/10.4324/97813156198 and jstor.org/stable/26333547 – but of course you might already note these.

  24. Any UK based carbon accountants want to talk to me about standardising #MRV practices in industry?

Running a project atm covering role of standards in accounting for emissions and opportunities for industry (publishing early next year).

  25. I've been keen to push more data transparency in #MRV and #carbonaccounting to help build a more complete picture of emissions.

But I've also been keen to emphasise that data transparency is also good for business because it can reveal opportunities for innovation.

This article provides some great examples of the latter...

  26. @george_morgan yes and the overlapping temporal boundaries that get applied to afforestation offsets make me a bit nervous from a #carbonaccounting perspective

  27. Hello 👋

I'm a policy advisor working on #decarbonising the UK economy.

I'm exploring how to build a more complete picture of emissions. E.g. what a regulator might look like for #carbonaccounting #Carbonoffsetting #carbonremoval and #carbonmarkets.

Also interested in global #carbonstandards #lowcarboneconomy and #CircularEconomy

I'm fascinated by #systemsthinking and #wickedproblems in #policy and #politics and I'm doing a PhD in this part time.
