I am pretty excited to soon start selling a PCB project I created. The Weblink Backpack- I designed around the Xiao ESP32 board, making it easy to connect to a controllable, neon transformer.

The backpack earned its keep when a client wanted their neon to be dimmable but didn’t want to see the knob — while still wanting the knob to be reachable. I realized that I could use my backpack design to bring the dimmer knob to the client's phone.
Since then, these backpacks have become my go to for just about any blinking or dimming design. I have started recommending them to others as the most convenient way to blink tubes except I need to start making them available- hence this video-https://makertube.net/w/gz8BQWatJoeMumnKMjSpJ5

Ich ärger mich immer wieder mit dem Captive-Portal des KA-WLANs rum. Auf meinem Laptop (auf dem Fedora KDE läuft) wird das komischerweise nicht automatisch aufgerufen.
Soeben habe ich das Problem für mich persönlich mit einmal googlen(startpagen) gelöst:
1. "ip route" ins terminal
2. erste IP-Adresse kopieren
3. in den Browser einfügen -

Atakujący wykorzystywał urządzenie WiFi Pineapple: Procedura była dość standardowa / prosta: Urządzenie WiFi Pineapple cały powyższy atak automatyzuje. Policja skonfiskowała sprzęt (telefon, laptop, WiFi Pineapple) na jednym z lotnisk, przeszukała również mieszkanie podejrzanego, gdzie zlokalizowano “tysiące intymnych zdjęć/filmów” oraz przechwycone dane logowania innych osób. Co ciekawe, przestępca próbował zdalnie usunąć...

Can’t connect to public WiFi via Linux
I am using Fedora 42, and I am unable to access the captive portal of inOui TGV. I can connect to the WiFi with no problems, but I can’t get access to the Internet.
I have tried everything:
- Connecting to
192.168.1.1, tohttp://neverssl.com, tohttp://wifi.sncfvia browser - Running
sudo dhclient -rand rebooting the device - Running
systemctl restart NetworkManager - Also other stuff I tried in the past with other public WiFis. I am sure there is something wrong with my specific device configuration, it’s not this network.
Nothing works 😩
Can somebody who understands this stuff help me?

If you're facing a #CaptivePortal that's misbehaving (#Marriott in my case) and won't redirect properly, pro tip: open a mobile browser and go to either clients3.google.com or neverssl.com, trigger the portal there, then when you're connected, disconnect and reconnect again so the phone realizes it's connected.
Amusingly you have to do this from @mozilla #Firefox for #Android instead of from Chrome or this wouldn't work. Sometimes Firefox is just better 😉

Some shots from my show at The Helper Mini in Utah. Electric Horses Forever has three horses running, with a few more out of the gallery. You can blink them if your near the gallery by joining the "Pink Pony Club" wifi network, and it's "captive portal" even works on iphones and androids.
The three of them should make a nice pink glow in the gallery day and night, and light up a little piece of the town of Helper.
The horses have made it out west!

Im #WIFIonICE im Tz9021 läuft die neue Version der Login Seite. Per DHCP wird jetzt über die Option 114 die URL für die Captive Portal API mitgeteilt. Außerdem erfolgt der Login jetzt über einen einzigen Klick auf den Button, der Haken muss nicht mehr gesetzt werden. In den Bildern sieht man, wie das in der Praxis aussieht.
Diese API hat zwei Vorteile:
- Bei Geräten die den Standard unterstützen (Android ab Version 11, iOS ab 14 und MacOS ab Big Sur, Windows -/?, Linux -/?) muss nicht mehr dieser "Hack", der alle Webseitenaufrufe auf die Login Seite weiterleitet und der regelmäßig Probleme macht, verwendet werden. Sie erfahren per HTTP/JSON API, u.a. ob sie eingeloggt sind und über welche URL sie das ändern können.
- Zusätzlich wird auch auf Geräten, die den Standard implementieren, eine Benachrichtigung angezeigt über die sie auf eine Venue-Info Seite gelangen. So kommt man dann ganz einfach zum ICE Portal. Wenn man die Benachrichtigung weggewischt hat kommt man über die WLAN Einstellungen wieder auf die Seite.Mehr Infos: https://developer.android.com/about/versions/11/features/captive-portal

Woah, not so fast.I’ve found that librarians are on avg. not good with inclusion, at least in my area post-2020 as a consequence of tech evolution.
The library provides Wi-Fi but excludes ethernet users. While that’s a small group to marginalise, the library’s Wi-Fi imposes a #captivePortal that imposes an SMS confirmation, which excludes people without mobile phone service and those who don’t carry their mobile phone.
Those are shitty decisions by library management, not librarians, but then librarians rarely try to help overcome the exclusive blockades. The tech is outsourced and neither librarians nor visitors have a way to submit a support ticket. Librarians do not make an effort to expose the problems upstream. They just say “if it doesn’t work, sorry, nothing I can do”.
Peak inclusivity for librarians was the 1990s with physical media like books. A few decades earlier librarians would call the police if a black person tried to access books. That was fixed in the 80s/90s. But enter technology and they just expect people to already have mainstream equipment and service.

Two different captive portal shittifications in one day:
1) the android-detected captive portal said "please paste this link into your *real* browser to sign in" (which I've seen twice in the last weeks)
2) the captive portal impl on this plane did not direct my android phone anywhere at all and it was only once i got my laptop online that I discovered i should manually visit this one specific url...

Bekanntlich sind eine der größten Geißeln der Menschheit sinnbefreite #CaptivePortal Popups für öffentlicher. Es werden weniger - aber zu langsam!
Unter iOS funktioniert immerhin das automatische Öffnen recht zuverlässig. Nicht so unter #MacOS - in 50% der Fälle passiert nach WLAN connect schlicht gar nichts und kein Internet wird mangels Zustimmung bereitgestellt.
Frage, bitte nur gesicherte Erkenntnisse: gibt es für MacOS einen Weg, der schlicht IMMER funktioniert? Gern auch in Statusleiste?
