New low in closed captioning ableism/audism...
Those familiar with this season will know the captions should have said Joel Dommett and Kumail Nanjiani.
Oh, well, hard to tell those brown comedians apart, I guess. /sarcasm
(The captions are craptions from YouTube. Taskmaster is licensed in several countries. They have enough money to upload with human captioning.)

Anyone out there know what's up with #aegisub? It was abandoned for years, I was very happy to see development get picked up again last year sometime, but now the website just says "This deployment is temporarily paused". It's the tool I usually recommend for better subtitle editing, but it's hard to recommend something that's disappeared.

I’m actively building an iPad version of CreatorCaps.
Not sure I’ll ship it yet.
Would this fit your captioning workflow? -
I do not like this at all, but par for the course with Meta.

At DjangoCon US 2025 in Chicago, more than one person shared the workflow of dictating their articles or slide notes to a template using mobile apps 🎙️
I was experimenting with https://huggingface.co/Mozilla/whisperfile, and it seems to work well on my PC 🔴
It occurred to me that it could be used to add live captioning to meetups or small conferences that can't afford live captioners as good as the one we had at DjangoCon 💡
Have any of you done any experiments?

We had a blast providing live captioning at PyCon US 2024! 😍

At a disability services conference today, and heard an interesting insight. One attendee was in a conversation with a hard of hearing student in a class that was using auto (#AI) #captions, and apologized to them for the occasional inaccuracies. The student said it wasn’t at all a worry, in large part because they’ve grown up with YouTube/Zoom automated captions, and are very used to “interpreting” for the AI systems errors. “I’ve been reading janky captions all my life; I know what they mean.” I hadn’t thought about it before, but it totally makes sense that today’s “digital natives” would understand AI #captioning almost like another English dialect.

It's hard to believe that just 14 days ago I was 13,000km away in California, wondering how Hans Hillen and my talk on AI and web accessibility would go down at a CSUN conference where there were at least 20 presentations on related topics (it all went very well, thanks for asking 🙂).
When we were preparing the talk, we realised we had way too much material, so we had to chop a lot out to fit the time available.
I kept what I cut out, though, and have now used that to expand my talk transcript into a TPGi blog post, using my slides to illustrate the article.
My focus was on how AI is changing the web accessibility tools we use now, namely automatic alt text generation, automatic captioning and AI-powered overlays. No lack of potential controversy, then!
Anyway, I hope it's an interesting read and maybe adds a little to your perspective and understanding of AI and web accessibility.

TIL. Differences between subtitles, captions, open, closed:
Summary:
* Subtitles: text corresponding to spoken lines
* Captions: text describing all audio (increasingly including non-audio as well)
* Open: Text burned into video (fixed language)
* Closed: Text overlaid onto video (enables multi-language text overlay)PS: Add "quote posting" now, you cowards. 😉

@tayarndt No, absolutely not. This is new unproven technology, which is largely based upon automatic captioning systems, which don't work for blind/visually impaired people, nor those with sensory overload problems.
This is beyond the problems Microsoft has as a company, so if an open source or Linux version of this came out, I'd still be a hard "no" because the technology it's based upon doesn't work for disabled people either.

If you’re interested in experiments in #accessibility, I have a personal essay out this week in The Journal for Research and Practice in College Teaching, in a themed issue on Teaching for Inclusion.

I've spent many years teaching accessibility and media, and the difference is not trivial in my over-educated opinion.
Captions include all sonic information, and are in the same language that is being spoken on screen.
Subtitles are a translation of the spoken dialog only, they do not include sound effects or music, etc. Subtitles present TRANSLATIONS in other languages than what is being spoken on screen.
Captions are a great example of Universal Design, while subtitles are a targeted accommodation for a specific audience.
For more information about this (and narrative descriptions) check out the Captioning Key from the Described and Captioned Media Program: https://dcmp.org/learn/captioningkey

Saw this on the birdsite and thought I'd offer an explanation...
As someone who does video captioning, I have gotten a list of character names and descriptions along with the file a grand total of ONCE. A lot of the time I have to dig through fan wikis for spellings, and that's assuming those sources exist. Including a list of names & terms should be BASIC for making sure subtitles are accurate, but corporations can't be arsed.

Something that'd be super cool is if streamers and YouTubers and people involved in closed captioning and transcription networked more closely with each other.
So, this project is called the Open Steno Project. It's a volunteer-run group that produces software, educational material, etc., in order to bring down the costs of stenography equipment, technology, and education. I love this project with all my heart.
https://www.openstenoproject.org/And this is the Discord server, for anyone wanting to talk to transcriptionists, closed captioners, stenography students, court reporters, and hobbyists about this field (I'm in it! It's super fun!). It's not specifically a place for *hiring* someone, but getting to know the industry and the people in it is a net good. And you might even learn stenography while you're at it, idk. 😎
