    Maybe not #anticapitalist, but #postcapitalist.

"#MarkFisher’s “#postcapitalistisland” isn’t a meticulously defined term in his work, but rather a powerful metaphor and conceptual tool he used in #CapitalistRealism (2009), to explore the possibility of imagining & creating spaces outside the logic of #capitalism.
…a zone of exception where different social relations, values, and modes of being can (temporarily) flourish."

  2. CW: platform criticism, failure of political activism

Trans*, queer, feminist, decolonial initiatives, progressive media festivals still using Telegram channels and Discord servers in 2026 to disseminate their content, "building communities". Mutual aid groups reluctantly sticking with WhatsApp. Still those who do know better, should know better, keep recommending BlueSky, keeping their X accounts. :neocat_baa: Oh, c'mon!

Not to mention Instagram, where the above waste time in posting selfies for beating the algorithm, obfuscating trigger words to avoid their content being shaded, policed, accounts getting suspended.

Oi gurl! :akko_listen: It's the encompassing capitalist realism, there's no alternative, hardly anyone uses Fedi platforms …

Feckin' tired of addressing these issues every time I bump into a new group, being that trans* political activist troublemaker making an ass out of herself :neocat_facepalm: :neocat_reject:

  7. #CapitalistRealism exposed: This email isn't a prediction of #socialism; it's an autopsy of late #capitalism. #PeterThiel identifies the system's fatal flaw: when people can't own anything, they stop believing in ownership itself. He’s not forecasting a revolution; he's stating a simple, brutal equation: no stake in the system equals no faith in the system. This email is one of the most quietly revealing artifacts of the entire post-2008 era.

  8. "#Culturalstudies — even music and arts journalism more broadly — had an unfortunate tendency to treat cultural artefacts like the capitalist elite, perhaps not consciously but certainly as a result of their pervasive influence. In this sense, #ChildrenOfMen becomes a hyperbolic rendering of the present, and so #Fisher puts it back to work on us, presenting "#capitalistrealism" — the belief that the end of the world is easier to imagine than the end of capitalism — immediately as a #symptomatology of the late capitalist condition, excavated from its own cultural offerings."

  12. "Shifty is Curtis at his most atmospheric, even surrealist. Getting lost in his late-capitalist video collages can feel like a shot to the heart, which is one way of saying his work often resembles the wild detours of Guy Debord and his Dada forebears. While the occasional titles describe what is happening, they feel more like bookends than breadcrumbs.
    (...)
His new five-part documentary is a kind of fairy-tale fever dream of capitalist realism, whose broad contours will be familiar to readers of Mark Fisher and Jacobin. The story begins with the earthquake of Thatcherism. We watch as the Iron Lady attempts to conjure national cohesion from a make-believe version of Britain’s imperial past, even as she elevates self-interest and private ambition to the level of civic virtue. What follows is a slow-motion fragmentation: scandals metastasize into generalized social paranoia, sensationalist media narratives erode institutional trust, and liberal elites, feeling betrayed by the newly Tory-voting working classes, retreat into the cultural capital of biennales, book prizes, and conceptual art. Industrial infrastructure is sold off for pennies on the pound as the government hands the reins of interest rates to unelected bankers. Unemployment, skinheads, check-cashing stores, and Netto discount supermarkets sprout like wild thyme across the English heather. Politicians end up believing the worst about themselves and begin abdicating responsibility. A cash-strapped Gordon Brown attempts early versions of public-private partnerships, indebting the government to private finance for the very services it had only just recently provided. In the background are the twin engines of finance and technology: unaccountable, placeless, and entirely prepared to occupy the vacuum left by political withdrawal."

  13. The Fediverse is a "#PostCapitalistIsland".
"A Space Beyond #CapitalistRealism, as diagnosed by #MarkFisher – the pervasive belief that #capitalism is not only the dominant economic system but the only viable and imaginable one (“It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism”). A “postcapitalist island” is a conceptual or physical space where this stranglehold on the imagination is suspended or broken...alternatives become thinkable and lived."

  14. Fight #capitalistrealism:
"Let me be clear: #Truth matters. #Documentation matters. Fighting #corruption matters. That #accountability seems out of reach right now doesn’t change that. When we internalize the belief that nothing can change, we stop demanding change. When we dismiss documentation of wrongdoing as pointless, we give wrongdoers exactly what they want: permission to continue unchecked and with no record of their actions."

  19. So I just kind of stumbled across this, what do you all think of Mark Fisher? Probably unsurprisingly, I've never heard of him as I'm not really exposed much to academic or even populist philosophy at the moment. Is his work like, word salad post modernism, something more systematized, semiotics? Is this a faithful summary of this idea of how Capitalism cancels the future? Which sounds about right. youtube.com/watch?v=4MPz3WjN0Po #Philosophy #CapitalistRealism #MarkFisher #FlammarionEngraving

  22. "Machines will replace us" is the new Capitalist Realism paranoia. Is easier to imagine machines dominating us than realize the class and colonialist domination we already live in. The bourgeoisie owns the means of production, including technology. The answer is rebelling against the ruling class, not machines. Data sovreignity, tribal sovreignity and anti imperialism is the way for true independence.

…this credo asserts that we already live in the best of all possible worlds (reflecting its Panglossian aspects) and that there is no alternative to the market-driven provision of our tech infrastructures (its neoliberal aspect)."

The #long90s take, aligned with Mark Fisher's #CapitalistRealism, has some reflections on this cultural freeze. But it's proponents say it is over now.

  27. "#AcidCommunism is an evolution of thought, following from #MarkFisher’s work on the #hauntology of culture and #CapitalistRealism. To grasp what acid communism is, therefore, we need to understand these preceding ideas.
Hauntology is the belief that the future has been cancelled.
Capitalist realism is the belief that there is no alternative to #capitalism."

  28. Episode 3.4 "#Capitalism, Community, and #Friendship with Joey Ayoub" is publically available now!

Why is it easier to imagine a #zombie apocalypse than it is a #generative, #sustainable future? This question drives Joey Ayoub, host of The Fire These Times: in fact, this season of his #podcast is partially about solarpunk and #generative #futures.

In this episode, @arielkroon speaks with @joey today about the imaginative expansion of #solarpunk, the “realist” impulse, climate anxiety and grief, and #community building in a #crisis. Also The Office. Trust us, it’s an important part of this whole conversation.
