I've been captivated by the WWII bunker on the beach of Cape May since I first encountered It in 2004. Before a beach reclamation project you could see the large wooden pilings that supported the structure and even walk beneath it.

Turn around for a great view of the Cape May lighthouse.

Photos from a recent visit to New Jersey's Cape May Zoo.

I have complicated feelings about zoos. Some of my fondest memories come from working on the grounds crew at Mesker Zoo in Evansville, Indiana, back in the early '90s. But over the decades, I've also become more aware of the frequent disconnect between many zoos' stated missions and their actual practices.

I fell in love with the WWII Bunker at Cape May Point, NJ back in 2003. Back then the beach was so eroded you could easily walk under the bunker between the support pylons. It was part of the coastal defense system during World War II. Built in 1942, this concrete structure once housed large guns to defend against enemy ships.
