An early morning #photograph of the #sunrise next to LC-37B and the #Delta IV #rocket waiting on its launch pad to carry a heavy payload to orbit.
The #DeltaIVHeavy is a rocket with three first stages attached side-by-side. The two outer #boosters burn at full throttle, while the center engine remains at low throttle until the outer two cores separate, then it throttles back up.Get a print of this image or other items at https://heronfox.pixels.com/featured/sun-peeks-over-ccafs-heron-and-fox.html

This #Photograph is of the #engine section of a #SpaceX #Falcon9 #rocket. The earliest version of the Falcon had its 9 #Merlin engines in a 3 by 3 square, but this was changed to the “Octoweb” configuration after the square shape induced undesired roll due to the gas generator exhaust.

#SpaceSaturday: During the early #Space Age, nearly everyone #smoked. This caused #ashtrays to become very common, even in the close environment of a launch #blockhouse or control center.
This #console, at Launch Complex 26 at Cape #Canaveral, where the first American satellite, Explorer 1 was launched, has a pull-out ashtray.
When preparing for a launch attempt, the blast doors would be closed and locked hours before launch while the fuel was loaded into the rocket, leaving only artificial ventilation. And everyone was smoking. And the bathroom was outside the blast door.

When #SpaceX was allowed to use LC-40 at Cape #Canaveral Air Force Station, SpaceX realized they needed to extend the flame #trench to be longer than what was used for the Titan IV #rocket that had used the #pad previously.
SpaceX chose to use a metal frame with water sprayers to flood the #exhaust to cool and slow it and prevent damage to the #vehicle or #infrastructure. The metal extensions are on the right of the image, next to the concrete structure next to the #strongback.

The Air Force #Space and #Missile #Museum on Cape #Canaveral is being refurbished and upgraded.
That includes taking some of the old rockets apart and refurbishing them to be displayed again, looking better than new, which is what’s happening to this early #Atlas rocket.

#SpaceSaturdary: The first #SpaceX #Falcon9 #Heavy #rocket launched from LC-39A at Kennedy Space Center. Crowds gathered across the #SpaceCoast to watch, including at Playalinda Beach.
In this #photograph, the rocket has risen above a hill, covered with eager viewers, while the three-cored rocket rising on three, firey exhaust plumes, and smoke billowing off to the left.
The views (and Fox, the #photographer) had waited hours in the hot Sun to see this. The #joy in the crowd is #palpable. One person has thrown their arms in the air, celebrating the rocket’s victory.
This #Falcon9Heavy carried an electric vehicle mounted on its upper stage as a test payload.
There is a sea grape bush in the foreground on the left.
