It's December so welcome to the 2025 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar featuring a different species each day for 24 days. We start with a Southern Migrant Hawker. A fairly recent arrival in the UK; this one was at #CanveyIsland #Essex in July. They like ditches with very little water, even if they dry out in summer. They're huge compared to most other UK species and relatively showy. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #ukwildlife #wildlife #insects #invertebrates #wildlifephotography #photography

Did I mention that I was #dragonfly hunting on Friday? I think I may have done. Southern Migrant Hawker, aka Blue-eyed Hawker, at #CanveyIsland patrolling a dried-up ditch. Which is pretty much their favourite habitat. This is one of the newer UK species, which has been here about 15 years or so. They breed successfully in south-east England, particularly Essex. #invertebrates #UKWildlife #photography #insects #odonata

Day 17 of the 2024 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Southern Migrant Hawker is a fairly recent arrival in the UK, mainly seen in Kent and #Essex. I'd never managed a photo of one in flight before this, so very pleased. Seen at the famous ditch in #CanveyIsland in July, on the same day as the Southern Emerald that was day 12 of the calendar. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #invertebrates #ukwildlife #photography

Day 12 of the 2024 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Southern Emerald Damselfly is small and easy to overlook but for me this was the highlight of my year - it was the only UK breeding species I'd never seen. In the famous ditch in #CanveyIsland #Essex in July.

Day 9 of the 2024 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Scarce Emerald Damselfly is restricted to the east here but commoner on the continent. It looks like the Common Emerald but is chunkier and has brighter blue eyes. This one in #CanveyIsland in July. The manky ditch I was searching when I found this will feature in this calendar a couple more times as it's a very good spot despite not being in a nature reserve. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #Essex #invertebrates #ukwildlife #photography

'Picture the most Tory place in Britain. Very probably you are thinking of a squires-and-shires sort of place—where lawns sweep and wisteria creeps; where old stone has been buffed up by new money; and where the people have Hunter wellies and hunting sympathies. The sort of place, in short, where someone might be murdered picturesquely in a Sunday evening mini-series. You would be wrong.'

Day 21 of the 2023 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Scarce Emerald #damselfly looks very like Common Emerald. The eyes are brighter blue and it's a bit more chunky looking. There are also some more subtle but specific & reliable differences if you know what to look for. It's confined to eastern parts of the UK - this one at #CanveyIsland in July. #Essex #DragonflyAdventCalendar #wildlife #insects #wildlifephotography #invertebrates

It's time for some more #dragonfly pictures. Then again it's always a good time for that...
This is a Southern Migrant Hawker, seen at a well-known ditch in #CanveyIsland #Essex. The weather was ideal - hot enough for them to be flying, but cloudy enough that some of them settled. #insects #wildlife #wildlifephotography #odonata -
It's 70 years since the devastating #NorthSeaFloods of 1953. Their impact in the Netherlands + Belgium is pretty well known, but I'm often surprised how little people in the UK are aware of the history.
Around 500 people in total lost their lives, including 300 on land in England when #CanveyIsland was flooded. The rest were lost at sea from ferry + fishing boats. As a result the #ThamesBarrage + #HumberBarrage were built.

Day 13 of the 2022 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Southern Migrant Hawker, aka Blue-eyed Hawker, arrived in the UK a few years ago and is spreading, but still mainly around the Thames Estuary. This one was in #CanveyIsland, #Essex, last July. #wildlife #insects #wildlifephotography

Very sad to hear about Wilko Johnson. Dr Feelgood was first band I ever saw live. What a sound! What a guitarist! Mesmerising. xx
