"But that's an individualist solution that only helps you", I hear you say, and you'd be right. I'd be happy to join a campaign of mass refusal to pay like the one in the UK. I do wonder how that's doing though; haven't heard from it in a while.

There may be practical, environmental or legal considerations stopping us from doing this, but the underlying logic is inescapable: the things we can still do to improve our energy bills require a large up-front investment, and weeks of disruption to life in the house. So if we're going to do that, why not cut the energy providers out entirely?

These same messages include cheerful CTAs to reduce energy use, but at this point, it's a lie (because of the implication that would cut the bills - not because energy conservation is bad). You cannot economize against this level of price gouging. The only option is to stop the price gouging. So we're seriously considering taking our house in Sleepytown, NL off-grid.
