SWANSEA: Opticians team lace up for Race for Life in memory of colleague Chris who gave more than 20 years to the practice
A team from a Swansea opticians is taking on the Race for Life this Saturday in memory of a retired colleague who spent more than 20 years with the practice before losing her battle with cancer.
Stephen Evans Optometrists is based on Kings Road in the SA1 Waterfront area — one of Swansea’s most distinctive regenerated neighbourhoods, sitting on the eastern edge of the city centre alongside the marina that the Race for Life course will take runners past on Saturday.
Six members of staff will line up for the Swansea 5K Race for Life on 17 May, with the course starting at Museum Green before heading towards the coast and along the marina.
The team is raising money for Cancer Research UK — a cause that carries deep personal meaning. Their retired colleague Chris Radford, who was part of the team for over two decades, died from cancer, and many of the six runners carry their own personal experiences of the disease.
Stephen Evans, optometrist and founder of the practice, said the event had brought the team together in a way that felt meaningful.
“We have a very diverse mix of experience amongst the team but everybody has been eager to take on the challenge,” he said. “It’s been a really nice way to unite us in practice; it’s been a key topic of conversation and created quite a bit of buzz, and I’m sure on the day we’ll all be spurring each other on.”
He added that being able to channel something positive from so much pain would make crossing the finish line all the more significant.
“To be able to bring some positivity around something that has had such a huge impact on the entire team and unfortunately the lives of so many others, will be incredibly rewarding,” he said.
The race will not be new territory for all of the team. Some completed the Race for Life back in 2015, and members of the group have previously taken on charity bike rides, sea swimming and late-night MoonWalks. Others have been training specifically for Saturday’s 5K, motivated by the chance to get outdoors and improve their fitness ahead of the event.
Evans said the team’s connection with the outdoors and nature ran through everything they did together as a practice.
“We’re generally very nature-driven,” he said. “It can really help, not just to complete 5Ks but also to improve mental wellbeing, which is also really important to us as a team. There are endless benefits just from getting outdoors and keeping active, supporting each other, and fostering the strong sense of community we already have.”
Cancer affects roughly one in two people in the UK. Survival rates have doubled over the last 40 years, with research efforts making significant advances in treating more than 200 different variations of the disease — but the impact it has on families and those closest to patients remains profound.
The Swansea Race for Life draws hundreds of participants each year, with runners and walkers of all abilities taking on the 5K course together. The Museum Green start point puts the route right in the heart of the city before opening out along the waterfront — a fitting backdrop for a team whose practice sits just metres from the same stretch of marina.
Cancer Research UK funds scientific research aimed at improving treatments and understanding the disease more deeply, with the goal of beating cancer sooner.

* Its narrow decision is to stop funding APCs, but its headline is that it will stop funding OA publishing as such. It leaves the distinct false impression that all OA journals charge APCs.
* Deep in the text it says that OA "hasn't worked. At least not in its current form." That looks like a recognition that not all OA depends on APCs. But it isn't explicit and didn't prevent careless language elsewhere in the statement.
* It never acknowledges that no-APC OA (#DiamondOA) journals exist, let alone that they constitute the majority of OA journals.
* It does acknowledge the existence of no-APC OA through repositories, or #GreenOA. But it falsely suggests that green OA must be embargoed. Just to give one notable set of counter-examples, all the federal OA policies in the US require unembargoed green OA.

Swansea Cancer Research shop among 58 set to close as charity cuts high‑street presence
The charity says rising costs and changing shopping habits have forced a nationwide restructuring of its retail network, with dozens of shops already closing and more expected over the next two years.
Union Street store to shut as charity cuts back
The Swansea city centre branch at 19 Union Street is one of the latest locations confirmed for closure. Cancer Research UK says the move is part of a long‑term plan to streamline operations and focus on its most profitable sites.
The charity previously announced it intended to close up to 88 shops by 2026, but the wider restructuring could eventually see nearly 200 stores shut across the UK.

Cancer Research UK says the closures are being driven by mounting operational pressures — including higher National Insurance contributions, rising energy bills, increased delivery costs and inflation affecting stock and logistics.
Once the restructuring is complete, the charity expects to operate around 320 shops, concentrating on locations that generate the strongest returns.
The organisation says the changes will free up around £12.4 million over the next five years, money it says will be redirected into life‑saving cancer research.
Online marketplace also being axed
As part of the overhaul, Cancer Research UK will also close its online marketplace in early 2026, meaning donated items will no longer be sold through external resale platforms.
Instead, the charity plans to shift towards larger “superstore”‑style outlets, with 12 new retail‑park‑sized stores planned by 2028.

Brothers rally to raise £3,000 after mum’s breast cancer diagnosis
When single mum Meinir Morgan sat her four teenage sons down just before Christmas to tell them she had breast cancer, she described it as the worst day of her life.
“I broke four hearts that day,” she said. “As their only constant, for me to have cancer wrecked their worlds.”
Meinir, from Birchgrove, had discovered a lump while on holiday in Florida. Within days of returning home she was seen at Singleton Hospital’s Breast Care Unit and, after a series of tests, was diagnosed with HER2+ cancer.
Treatment began on New Year’s Day: four months of chemotherapy, followed by surgery, radiotherapy and a year‑long course of immunotherapy. The side‑effects were brutal. “Chemo was rough, and I was hospitalised twice,” she recalled. “It was so hard on the boys to see me so ill. I lost my hair, but we made light of it with jokes about wigs and colours.”
A teenage response to heartbreak
For Lewis (18), Rhys (17), Ioan (15) and Iestyn (13), the news was devastating — but their response was immediate.
“It was almost instant,” said Lewis. “We thought, we’ve just got to crack on. The best way to support Mum was to raise money for the people taking care of her.”
With the backing of their school, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe, the brothers organised a bake sale, joined the Race for Life 5k, and hosted an afternoon tea. They also set up a JustGiving page, nervously setting a £500 target.
They needn’t have worried. Donations poured in, and by the end they had raised £3,150.

Earlier this month, the family returned to Singleton Hospital to hand over cheques of £1,500 each to the Chemotherapy Day Unit and the Breast Care Unit. The remaining £150 went to Cancer Research UK.
Meinir said she was “immensely proud” of her sons:
“When they were facing the worst news and scared of what the future held, they decided this was a positive focus for them — all while sitting A‑levels and GCSEs. It’s been the most challenging year, but they have been awesome.”
Community pride
Cathy Stevens, community support officer for Swansea Bay Health Charity, praised the boys’ determination:
“Throughout the entire journey, they kept their mum at the heart of everything they did. The result is a truly amazing achievement. Da iawn.”
For Meinir, the fundraising has been more than just money raised. It has given her sons a way to channel their fear into something positive. “They’ve been surrounded by great friends and support from the school,” she said. “I couldn’t be prouder.”
