OTD in 1944, Tommy Douglas becomes the Premier of Saskatchewan. In just a few short years he would implement #UniversalHealthcare in the province and spark similar movement across Canada, ultimately resulting in a national program. He is undoubtedly one of the most impactful Canadians in history and we need another like him to deliver us from capitalism's hold on government policy.

If you search for "Canada's greatest surgeon" some of the top results will include Dr. Tyrone David, acknowledged by experts worldwide to be one of the top heart surgeons in history. I'm reminded of his impact every year as I was his patient on July 2nd, 2018. He was awarded The Order of Canada and has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.
This is an older tribute that captures some of his respect earned.

#HappyBirthday to Graham Greene who left us too early in September 2025. Greene was Oneida born on June 22, 1952, in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario. He worked as a draftsperson, a welder, and as an audio technician for Toronto rock bands before moving into an acting career. He was one of Canada’s most successful actors with over 180 movie and TV credits, an Academy Award and an Order of Canada.

The fake holiday calendar tells me that it's Daniel Boone Day and prompted me to find out who were Canada's most famous Frontiersmen. Here's a link to 5 of our greatest historical #CanadianLegends from the rough and wild frontier days. There's a long read on each and, with the exception of Kootenai Brown, all were new to me. Grab a coffee or tea, and take a step back to a time when maps and laws barely existed.

One of the most influential singer-songwriters from the 1960s, Mitchell became known for her lyrics and unconventional compositions, incorporating pop, jazz, and, rock. Among her accolades are 11 Grammy Awards, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Rolling Stone named her one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

#HappyBirthday to Jean Drapeau, Mayor of Montreal 1954-57 and 1960-86. Born on this day in 1916, in Montreal, he passed away in 1999. His legacy includes delivering Canada's Centennial birthday party #Expo67 and the 1976 #SummerOlympics to the city. But his most famous quote haunted him for years...

“The Games could no more run a deficit than a man could have a baby."

On this day in 2012 Leonard Cohen releases "Old Ideas", an album that becomes No.1 in 10 countries. It easy to forget just how big an impact Cohen made in music from the late 60s through to this album. Many fans were introduced to his music via his song "Hallelujah". Cohen first released it on his 1984 album Various Positions, though it gained massive popularity through covers by artists like Jeff Buckley and K.D. Lang. He had an incredible journey, starting as a poet, enjoying stardom in the 70s, retiring to a monastery in the 90s, and having to tour later in life to rebuild his fortune after suffering embezzlement by his agent.

#HappyBirthday to Milan Chvostek (October 4, 1932 – November 8, 2018) was a producer/director at the CBC. He worked on A Case for the Court, The Lively Arts, This Hour Has Seven Days, Science Magazine and the CBC's flagship show The Nature of Things,[ which has aired in nearly fifty countries worldwide. Awards for Chvostek's shows include one from the Monte Carlo Television Festival awarded by Prince Rainier III in 1975, and the Bell Northern Research Communications Award for science programming from the Canadian Science Writers' Association (Chvostek is the only three-time winner of this award) in 1974 and 1975. After a decade of teaching television broadcast at Seneca College, Toronto (1986 to 1996), he embarked upon a freelance videography and photography career, working both independently and in partnership with his wife, journalist Isobel Warren. He also started researching climate change in the 1960s.

#HappyBirthday to Harold Jay Smith, born May 26, 1912. Better known by his stage name Jay Silverheels, he is mostly recognized for his role as Tonto in the TV series The Lone Ranger. Silverheels was born on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve, near Hagersville, Ontario, and was an accomplished athlete before being discovered and starting his acting career.

He also won awards for his work in acting and producing. He achieved all that after giving up his job as head writer for the Coca-Cola account at an ad agency in New York. Take off you hoser.

McDonald's birthday, born in 1961, is a good excuse to revisit the quirky alternative comedy genius that made the Kids In The Hall a favourite TV show across North America. After 5 seasons, 1989 to 1993, they had continued success together and individually.
