  1. The Sweet History of the Butter Tart

The butter tart, a distinctly Canadian dessert, first appeared in print in 1900 in the Women's Auxiliary of the Royal Victoria Hospital Cookbook in Barrie, Ontario. This sweet treat features a flaky pastry shell filled with a buttery, sugary mixture that can be runny or firm depending on preference. The great debate: with raisins or without? 🥧

  2. Catching up on the columns I didn't share while deep into recuperation

Since Jamaican Independence Day is on 6 August, and Jamaican food is **so** tasty, I chatted with Kitchener's Chef Ofelia Clarke about the foods she grew up with :)

  5. That drink has the distinct flavour of these candies.

I think these may be uniquely in the Canadian Halloween tradition, rather than available broadly, but they have a distinct flavour that isn't really like caramel nor molasses, but evokes instant childhood memories.

  11. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is now finally cracking down on grocery stores that promote imported food as Canadian.

The CFIA issued $10,000 fines to two Loblaws stores (yep, them again) in Toronto: Canadian Superstore and Fortinos.

The run up to the fines, based on "erroneous country-of-origin claims":

🍌 27 violations identified Sept 2025, mostly national chains
    🍌 78 violations identified between between Nov 1, 2024, and Feb 25, 2026

  12. YES

When poutine was brought to English Canada (via fast food), curds were changed so they wouldn't squeak (frozen curds do not squeak, but they melt). Which paved the way for cheese abominations...

  17. The Invention of Hawaiian Pizza: A Canadian Creation

Contrary to its name, Hawaiian pizza was actually invented in Canada! In 1962, Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant who ran a restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, created this controversial pineapple-topped pizza. Panopoulos chose the name Hawaiian after the brand of canned pineapple they were using at the time. 🍍

Toronto food writer Suresh Doss is known for finding those delicious spots often overlooked by mainstream food narrative.

I was thrilled to be asked to chat with him about his new show, Locals Welcome, on CBC Gem, & what makes a hidden gem.
