Remember that. I used to think of blood donation as an item on a personal bucket list, something noble to do and then move on. I wanted to give blood the way others want to run a marathon or learn a new language. It felt symbolic to achieve that like a participation badge.

Then one day a family member needed a transfusion. At that moment, the idea stopped being abstract or altruistic. Blood was no longer a concept or a charitable gesture; it was survival moving through a tube. I told myself that if someone else could give for my family, I could give for someone else’s. In 2015, I did it for the first time.

Weeks later, a letter arrived. A thank-you note from Canadian Blood Services. Inside, a donor card with my name printed neatly, like an invitation of sorts. I hadn’t expected that. As a millennial, I’ll admit I have a weakness for membership cards. They suggest belonging. Participation. Continuity.

Donation # 50! (Whole blood) #CanadianBloodServices

I was considering become a #blood donor. This is what Canadian Blood Services wanted me to agree to "Reliance on any information provided by Canadian Blood Services appearing on or provided in relation to this Site is solely at your own risk." So, I can't trust that safeguards promised for me as a donor on their site will be honoured. I decided not to donate blood.

Yeah, I'm aware our experience has not be, unfortunately, unique.

There was a small group on iirc FB who were calling out #CanadianBloodServices at the time, but I think they succumbed to exhaustion, and I can't say I'm surprised. One can only "riss up a pope" for so long.

ALL levels of Health Care in Canada have been infiltrated by these kinds of anti-science grifters.

They should all be made unemployed, immediately.

For decades, I donated regularly until.....

During the all too short span of time where our governments pretended to G a F about covid, I had a donation scheduled.

Wearing a brand new N95, I walked into my local (#Windsor #Ontario #YQG ) #CanadianBloodServices to meet my appointment.

I was told, in no uncertain terms, that I would have to remove my "pointless N95" and instead wear their "more effective surgical mask" (told to me by, might I add, an unmasked "supervisor")

"In what universe is that surgical mask more effective than my N95?" I asked.

She replied "None of it's real anyway"

I left.

I called them out on what was still then Twitter, and on Facebook. All that happened was, they blocked me.

When I contacted CBS at their National Level I was told "we don't manage the affairs of individual facilities".

So, well, fuck #CBS. We should never have privatized.

If you need blood and don't get it, it's their fault.

I'm a regular #blooddonor & today I donated after work. I decided to dedicate this 35th donation to a life cut short - my cousin's 24yo son died tragically in an auto accident just before Easter. I always consider every donation a #payitforward deed. I like to also honour those no longer with us, and what better way than by saving some lives.

I can say I literally bleed for my country. After work I donated blood & the nursing staff gave me & the other donors there a free #toque to help promote #blooddonation. This will be my 34th #wholeblood donation, according to my record with #CanadianBloodServices. I go to the permanent #Yonge & #Bloor site in #Toronto. I dedicate this donation to the recent passings in both my family & my friends' families. It's been a rough start to 2025.

I did not know this. How much are people paid to donate? I'm going to go out on a limb and say not very much. What other countries besides the US do this? I understand why #Grifols and #CanadianBloodServices kept this covered up.

Blood donor clinic in town told me today is the last Saturday appointment. Going forward, they'll only be open on weekdays.

Did not book my next appointment.
