  1. Wildfire smoke is impacting air quality in many provinces today and tomorrow. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe during smoke events:

    - Look at the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for your region. ‼️
    - Stay indoors if you can. 🏠
    - If you must be outside, wear a well-fitted respirator mask. 😷
    - Keep windows and doors closed and operate a HEPA air purifier or Corsi-Rosenthal box. 💨

You can request free masks through our Request Program: donatemask.ca/request. You can also purchase masks and clean air tools in our charity fundraising store: buymask.ca.

  2. The air quality is even worse today. I'm glad it wasn't too bad while I was walking home from the dentist. I feel weak and woozy, though. #AirQuality #ClimateDiary #CanadaWildfire

  3. My daily walking took a big dive since Canada caught on fire. It took an even bigger dive once I got COVID. Seeing it graphed out like this really brings it home. #ClimateDiary #CanadaWildfire #walking #covid

  4. Terrible air quality in #wildfire smoke Saturday morning around Great Slave Lake, NWT. There are more than half a dozen sensors in the Yellowknife area and all are reporting PM2.5 AQI above 450. More than 4 million hectares have burned in the NWT this season. Graphic and data courtesy PurpleAir. #ntwx #CanadaWildfire #Canada

  6. Seasonal total #wildfire total area burned in #Canada, 1980 to 2023. For this year, total burned through August 29 at 15.20 million hectares. That's more than 8 times the 43 year median and almost exact double the previous record of 7.65 million hectares burned in 1989. 7. ⚡️ Update: Canada's Yellowknife, a major city in the far north, is being evacuated as a wildfire approaches. Residents have until noon Friday to leave, as the fire is now within 11 miles of the city. Another fire threatens Hay River. The region's environment minister warns that without rain, the fire could reach the outskirts of Yellowknife by the weekend, urging residents not to risk their lives by staying. #CanadaWildfire #EvacuationRace riskmap.com/incidents/1882302/

  8. So sad.
Couturier D'Arcy Moses, from Pedzéh Kı̨ (Dene) First Nation, with 25 yrs as a fashion designer working from his studio in Enterprize, NWT, has lost $1000s++ of equipment, including sewing machines, garments & couture (some irreplaceable), patterns & family heirlooms, to the wildfire.

  9. Latest #wildfire estimate from Northwest Territories Department of Environment and Climate Change shows 3.43 million hectares burned thus far in 2023. This is now the greatest area burned in NWT in the past 44 years, eclipsing the previous highest of 3.42 million ha in 2014. 2023 area is sure to increase. #ntwx #Arctic #Canada #CanadaWildfire #Summer2023

  10. Updated August 21: #Canada #wildfire this year has now burned more 15 million hectares (150,000 km²). That's about twice the previous largest season of 1989. Data from Canadian Wildland Fire Information System. #Summer2023 #CanadaWildfire

  11. Government of Northwest Territories, #Canada updated estimate of #wildfire area burned is now at 3.36 million ha (7.76 million acres). Since 1988, the most area burned in season in the NWT was 3.42 million ha in 2014. #ntwx #Summer2023 #CanadaWildfire

  12. I didn't realize just how vast the forest fire emissions are. Brace yourself for some bitter truth:

In the 2010s: forest carbon losses were "more than most nations emit"

To offset that we would have to
    A. eliminate all fossil-fuelled road vehicles:
    - cars
    - heavy-duty freight trucks
    B. stop burning natural gas, across the nation

  13. I am so proud to hear two of our 4 local fire departments have been able to answer the call and send resources (people, trucks and tenders) to West Kelowna. Some are friends, all are neighbours. Thank you Sproat Lake and Cherry Creek VFDs!! Over 100 firefighters from all over the province of BC have joined the fight today, they drove through the night to get there. Multiple structures lost last night, but also multiple saved, including homes, condo towers, and critical infrastructure like a brand new, not-yet-turned on, $75M drinking water treatment plant. The weather is backing off, just a little. I hope that means we will be able to get a handle on it. #BCWildfire #CanadianWildfires #CanadaWildfire #BCPoli #CanPoli #ClimateChange

  14. How "over the top" is this year's #wildfire season across #Canada? The 13.7 million hectares burned (thus far) is seven times the 1980-22 median and is 56 percent higher than the previous highest seasonal total (1989)! That's WAAAY over the top. Data from Canadian Wildland Fire Information System. #Summer2023 #CanadaWildfire

  15. Today on my way home I was stuck in the line on #bchwy4 due to the reconstruction after the June fire. While I was waiting I saw a familiar Volunteer Fire Department truck and tender drive past going East. This was just minutes after hearing that the Provincial State of Emergency had been called due to the fires in the Interior. I know the chief of that department. We went to high school together. So I texted him and wished him and his crews good luck as I figured they were on their way to the ferry and the mainland to help. He texted back and confirmed. I hope he and all the first responders called in to help are OK.

Oh, we also heard from a close friend. Their house is in an Evac Alert zone. (not an Order yet). She said the fire was very worrying last night. They decided to head to Vancouver to stay with family. They're there now. Hopefully they have a home to go back to.
