This evening I joined a small tour and commemoration at #Westduin cemetery in The Hague.
This is part of a wider Dutch event of placing candles on the graves at allied war cemeteries and of WW2 resistance fighters and victims on Christmas Eve.
Tonight was cold and clear, and a smaller than usual crowd toured the cemetery, learning about the battle at Westduin (when Germany invaded in May 1940), visiting the #Stijkelgroep graves and memorial, and the #CWGC cemetery. #CanadaRemembers #DenHaag -

My dad, a spry 84yo Canadian retired rancher now, was a boy in England during WWII. He would pick berries to give to Grandma for fallen soldiers who may have ended up in triage in their village. And he was well versed in spotting Nazi aircraft overhead, distinguishing them from the allies. My Grandpa on my maternal side was in the RCAF and is buried in the Field of Honour at Queen’s Park in Calgary with my Nanny.
So many stories.

We visited the Tower of London in September of 2014 and I was very moved by the poppy display. It's mind blowing to think that the poppies, and this wasn't the final number displayed, represent the 888,246 lives lost in WW1. #Lestweforget #canadaremembers

The 124th Pioneer Battalion CEF, my great grandfather's first unit during the first world war. This is an excellent high quality panoramic photo that's hard to believe is over 100 years old. This would have been taken the day after or so of his enlistment.
