  1. I just saw this site that lists out all MLAs that are landlords.

    Unpopular opinion:

I actually want politicians to be landlords or aspire to be landlords.

Then they'd realize: rent control doesn't work, and NIMBYs are obnoxious.

Put an artificial cap on rent, and you get a natural cap in housing creation.

Lift rent control, and watch the supply grow.

  2. RE: flipboard.com/@cbcnews/ottawa-

Mandatory tracking being proposed. Even with guard rails, I'd rather not have that data be collected.

Also, can't they determine our locations already based on which cell towers you're connected to? Why is this needed?

Conservatives accuse PM Carney of flip-flopping on Iran military campaign

    https://ground.news/article/conservatives-accuse-pm-carney-of-flip-flopping-on-iran-military-campaign?utm_source=mobile-app&utm_medium=newsroom-share

-Carney prefers to change his stance as new information becomes available, unlike
#PP who only changes his mind if new money becomes available!

Carney takes cautious approach to Trump’s invitation to join ‘Board of Peace so called #PeaceBoard, which is actually a massive grift by tRump ($1billion you join) and all the money goes to tRump personally, not you the US government, secondly the most prominent members besides tRump include Putin, Luschenk, Orban and other #Tyrants. Carney we should not be joining the #NAZIs we should be punching them in the nose! Stop trying to appease tRump, tell him to Fuck Off!

  5. CW: Taxation

Why do I keep saying that landowners are the ones that should pay higher taxes?

It's because it doesn't make sense to me that land ownership should be respected for "not paying into the system".

Like, if you want to play this silly game that little boys play of territorialism in elementary school playgrounds, where they draw imaginary boundaries, then by all means do so.

But for people who didn't consent to it, you gotta have a good reason why the respect for imaginary boundaries should be enforced.

To make it really easy: don't tax improvements; just land ownership.

  6. CW: Taxation

The Reddit comments regarding the following post are calling out how it is absolutely fair that BC assessment has reclassified Big Bang Cider's land use as "light industrial", but I don't think land use should be taxed more.

Just land occupation should be taxed, and nothing else.

(Of course, I'm probably the "anti-tax (except land)" equivalent of marxists: I'm probably missing nuance.)

  7. CW: Canadian politics and immigration

    RE: techhub.social/@manlycoffee/11

(Re-posting, but different, because I just found out today that my server supports quote-boosting.)

I wrote this parable to criticize Canada's immigration situation.

During heightened immigration, whenever I'd raise concerns that we're bringing in too many people without offering the proper support structures, I'd get accused of being a xenophobe.

Fast forward to a housing crisis, and increased youth unemployment rate, now people have unfortunately become jaded against immigrants, even though newcomers do not deserve the hate.

That, and the government has now slammed on the breaks on immigration.

This cut in immigration numbers is bad.

  10. Banning foreign investments (of condominiums) was a bad call.

Instead, just crank up the vacancy tax.

Foreign investors park their money, but if they're dumb enough to not rent it out, then we collect a tax, and use the funds to house the unhoused.

    Win-win.

But it only makes sense if rent control and eviction rules are relaxed. (I'm not against rent control; I'm just against figures pulled out of the government's ass.)

  11. Look, I'm not going to deny that the GENIUS Act has major flaws, but I really, really hope that there are regulations on stablecoins, rather than say "haha, blockchains are a scam, therefore we shouldn't regulate that stuff."

  12. I keep hearing that reddit.com/r/canada is a right-wing haven.

I'm not seeing it, based on this thread about Canada rescinding the Digital Services Tax (DST).

The DST is absolutely stupid, and should have never been enacted.

We hate Americans for instituting a tariff?

Canadians are not innocent, and it's not OK. It's just another pot calling the kettle black.

Previously, I have complained about leftists doing stupid stuff, but when someone makes an intelligent comment about why leftists are not actually stupid, I immediately back down.

But this, I'm definitely digging my heels on.

It's a hill I'm willing to die on.

  13. If I were a tyrannical leader of Canada, I'd:

    - ban municipalities from collecting improvements taxes, and have them be forced to rely exclusively on land tax
    - make it unconstitutional for the median Canadian to have more than 30% of their take-home pay go towards shelter cost (mortgage and/or rent). If the government fails to ensure this, they have to foot the difference (not landlords or other financiers)
    - make it unconstitutional for the median Canadian to be on the tenant market for too long. The government failing to enforce this right may face punitive measures levied against it
    - provide constitutional protection for home builders, and home providers (such as landlords)
    - ban rent control

  15. Quote of the day from Mark Carney on Pierre Poilievre...

“He is the type of lifelong politician — and I’ve seen this type around the world — who worships at the alter of the free market despite never having made a payroll himself,” said Carney.

“Unlike Pierre Poilievre, I’ve actually worked in the private sector. I know how the world works, and I know how it can be made to work better for all of us,” he added.

    Enough said.

This is an infuriating interview. I have a lot of (dwindling...?) respect for Jesse Brown and echo his concerns about rising antisemitism, however I understand the basic fact that "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" in no way procludes the simultaneous freedom of Jewish people in the same territory.

Dismissing the whole Pro-Palestinian movement because there are real instances of antisemitism at decentralised protests gets us no closer to peace because the systems of racism will be reflected in individuals in movements until racism is extinguished. The movement itself, its concerns and demands are not antisemitic. The racism is real though and must be dealt with, as to must we deal with the genocide and the occupation.

In this sorry excuse of an interview, Jesse doesnt even refer to the occuparion as such. Jesse also fails to push back when the Ambassador is flippant and dismissive about Isreal being labaled "colonialist," but Isreal is committing textbook settler colonialism (which surely Jesse knows) and that is the root of the problem.
