  1. I just saw this site that lists out all MLAs that are landlords.

    Unpopular opinion:

I actually want politicians to be landlords or aspire to be landlords.

Then they'd realize: rent control doesn't work, and NIMBYs are obnoxious.

Put an artificial cap on rent, and you get a natural cap in housing creation.

Lift rent control, and watch the supply grow.

  2. RE: techhub.social/@manlycoffee/11

Canada is utterly incompetent with regards to housing.

    What I'd opt for:

    - ban improvements taxes; taxes should only be levied against the land not the improvements on them

    - ban single-family zonings (sure, single family is allowed, just that municipalities are not allowed to ban higher occupancy)

    - ban municipalities and provinces from levying annual rent control (maybe rent increase regulations to make it tolerable for tenants, but that's it)

    - reduce the time for landlords to evict delinquent tenants

    - Canada must compete with landlords rather than regulating against them; instead of regulating, lead by example! Increase supply (the government can be as selfish as it wants; charge as much rent as it wants, but it needs to remain operationally viable to cover taxes and other costs to unoccupied unit, so in competing with landlords, it may need to drop the rent, but NOT out of charity but out of operational necessity)

  3. Over the past couple of months it's become clear that the usual discontent Albertans have with the federal government has morphed into something far more concerning. I lived in Northern Alberta for five years until 1984 and there was no love lost for Ottawa and especially Pierre Trudeau and his National Energy Program. But what is happening now is very different.

  4. It's time for another article abut the ongoing cultural and economic conflct between Canada and the United States. It's not getting any better.

  5. Carney Roasts Trump as Canadians Boycott U.S. and Liberals Win Big

Mark Carney calls out Trump as Canadians boycott U.S. goods and travel, boosting Liberal power and signaling global pushback against destabilizing leadership.

  6. RE: techhub.social/@manlycoffee/11

When Pierre Poilievre said that Mark Carney is badly educated on economics, sure, I don't think Poilievre should be the one saying this, but I still held back from hopping on the dogpiling bandwagon of laughing at Poilievre.

To quote Nassim Taleb on this "I don't care if we have 15 PhDs or 500 PhDs", in reference to people criticizing Taleb of unhedged risk moments that lead up to the 2008 recession, many of them claiming "these PhDs disagree with Mr. Taleb".

  7. The Parliament of Estonia is orders of magnitude smarter than whoever is in the Parliament of Canada (including Mark Carney).

  8. RE: techhub.social/@manlycoffee/11

Canada needs more talented technical people who think from first principles.

My biggest concern is, no matter how much tech use feels liberating, the rollouts are far from it.

Something that will 100% not be liberating: technical rollouts mandating mobile phone use. Tech is supposed to make things more convenient (such as faster database lookups). It shouldn't lock people into forcing them to get a mobile phone that mandates the creation of an account with either Apple or Google.

  9. The liberal party has adopted a motion to ban social media use for anyone under the age of 16.

Perhaps it is a good idea.

I don't know. Perhaps not, due to privacy concerns.

But personally, I'd push for first banning infinity-scrolling video functionality that has been plaguing social media, not just TikTok, but YouTube (via YouTube Shorts), Instagram (via Reels), Facebook (also called Reels), X (formerly known as Twitter has full-screen video scrolling down to another arbitrary video), Snapchat (gotta make money somehow; vanishing messages aren't gonna keep the lights on), Reddit (which has full screen video scroll to more videos).

  10. Starting my most ambitious Wikipedia project: I'm going to try to read the articles about every single Canadian Prime Minister in order because it seems like it'd be the most coherent way to understand some of the political history of our neighbors to the North where I dream of living one day.
