#GasPrices were $4.29, some higher at $4.57 but it was clear $4.19 was supposed to be cheap. This was true in northern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. But over the years I got my favorite spots, where I bought at $4.02 & $3.99 (PA & NJ respectively).
Last #CampingTrip, I got gas for $3.69 if not less.
(When the nearest grocery [sorry, "supermarket"] is 25 minutes each way, you start thinking gas cost.)

Are you excited for Norwescon 49? We are! In case you missed it, here are the guests of honor we have lined up for 2027:

• Writer Guest of Honor: Seanan McGuire (aka Mira Grant) is an author of speculative fiction who has released over 100 books, comics, and collections since her first publication in 2009.
• Artist Guest of Honor: Todd Lockwood is a renowned American artist known for his exceptional contributions to fantasy and science fiction illustration, particularly in the realms of Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.
• Science Guest of Honor: Erin Macdonald is an award-winning writer, sciencecommunicator, producer, and science advisor, with a doctorate in astrophysics. She is most well known for her work on the Star Trek franchise.
• Spotlight Publisher: DAW Books, represented at Norwescon by Betsy Wollheim, was the first publishing company ever to be devoted exclusively to science fiction and fantasy. It has published over 2,000 titles over 50 years.
• Special Guest of Honor: Matt Dinniman is a New York Times bestselling author, best known for the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. In addition to writing, Matt is an artist, a musician, and pet lover.

Join Us for the Norwescon Camping Trip

Spend some time in nature with fellow fans! The Norwescon Camping Trip is open to all past members of Norwescon.

This year we have reserved the group camp site at Bay View State Park, near Mount Vernon, on July 10–12. The site can accommodate up to 24 tent campers, with a mix of sunny and shady sites. There are picnic tables and a main campfire ring. Recreation around the park includes light hiking and metal detecting, and the beach area is great for swimming and small watercraft such as kayaks and paddle boards. Of course, there will be tabletop games and marshmallows! Full bathrooms with showers are available nearby.

Cost depends on the number of campers on our site, but it generally runs $10–$15 per person for the weekend, which includes admission and parking (no Discover Pass required). RVs and sleeping trailers will require a separate reservation. Check in on Friday begins at 3 p.m. To RSVP or ask for more information, please email us.

Norwescon’s online historical archives continue to grow! Norwescon historian Michael Citrak has been collecting physical artifacts from every year of Norwescon, and assistant historian Michael Hanscom digitizes them to add to the online archives. Here are some things we’ve added recently:

Norwescon 48: This collection has all the archives from the most recent year. We’d like to highlight two items of note:

• The Norwescon 48 Masquerade. If you would like to revisit your favorite costumes and presentations, the full masquerade video is available, with optional captions and transcript.
• Panel: Norwescon: Local but Not Little. Recorded live at the 2025 Seattle Worldcon, panelists Salt Hale, Michael Hanscom, Taylor Tomblin, and Tim Bennett discuss Norwescon’s past, present, and future. (Audio with transcript.)

Westwind: Westwind was the newsletter of the Northwest Science Fiction Society (NWSFS), Norwescon’s original parent organization. We currently have 23 issues archived, ranging from issue 22 from November 1978 to issue 140 from May/June 1989. Obviously there are missing issues, but Michael H. has a large stack he’s working on, thanks to Julie Zetterburg Sardo and Doug Booze for the donations. All are screen-reader accessible PDFs with text on the webpage as well.

Science Guest of Honor—Summer Ash

Summer Ash is an astrophysicist, rocket scientist, and freelance science communicator. She enjoys Jupiter, Orion, supermassive black holes, and advocating for equity, accessibility, and inclusion across all STEM fields.

As a self-professed space cadet, Summer grew up dragging friends and family out at all hours of the day or night to look up at the sky. She has a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and a master’s in space studies from the International Space University, and she worked as an aerospace engineer on the X-34 Program at Orbital Sciences Corporation (now Orbital ATK) before making the jump from low-earth orbit to intergalactic scales. Summer did graduate research at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge on the evolution of radio galaxies and the effect of active galactic nuclei (aka AGN or supermassive black holes) on galaxies and galaxy clusters.

After academia, Summer transitioned to education and outreach and has worked for the World Science Festival, Columbia University, and the Very Large Array (VLA) at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). Her written work has been published online in The Atlantic, Smithsonian, Scientific American, Atlas Obscura, Slate, Nautilus Magazine, SyFy.com, and Now.Space. She has hosted web videos for NBC.com, science videos for the Science Forward program at CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College, and NRAO’s Baseline video series. She moderated Virtual Astro Live for the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum from 2020 to 2023 and was the in-house astrophysicist for The Rachel Maddow Show from 2009 to 2016. Summer is also a consultant for the Science & Entertainment Exchange, an arm of the National Academies of Science.

If she has any time left over after that, Summer spends it bringing astronomy and fashion together as a cofounder of STARtorialist.

Teen Engagement Is Returning for NWC48!

All teens ages 13 to 18 are encouraged to participate in activities all weekend long. Our focus is on teaching life skills and how the convention works, with the goal of getting teens to interact with each other in an analog environment. They will be operating out of the Shire, aka the Teen Lounge.

This year’s hands-on activity is origami, so we are looking for origami paper and instruction books. We also need prizes, such as Nerf and Lego toys and full-size candy bars. Just like last year, we are planning a “Learn To Play Magic: The Gathering” class, so we need donations of Magic cards to make teaching decks that the teens can take home with them.

Single Pattern Contest!

Each year, the Single Pattern Contest challenges creative, sewing, and crafting skills by choosing one pattern as the basis for your creativity! The object of the competition is to construct a one-of-a-kind creation using this pattern. Some adjustments or changes to the pattern are allowed as long as the end product reflects the original pattern.

Norwescon is excited to announce the two pattern options for this year’s Single Pattern Contest: this Hooded Duster Coat or McCall’s Misses’/Men’s Lined and Unlined Cape (M4139).

Competition awards will include, but are not limited to, best workmanship, best use of convention theme, and best in competition. Awards will be given out during the masquerade halftime.

The Norwescon Camping Trip Is Back!

Join us for a weekend in the woods at the Bay View State Park group campsite, near Mount Vernon, over the weekend of July 10 to 12. Cost will depend on how many people join us, but it typically runs between $15 and $20 per person for the weekend.

The site features tent camping for up to 24 people, with picnic tables, fire rings, charcoal grills, full bathrooms, and showers. The park includes light hiking and biking trails, fishing with permit, and an area for metal detecting. Non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks and paddleboards may be used on the Sound.

No RVs or trailers are allowed at the group site, and open fires, including the grill, will depend on conditions. Check-in on Friday begins at 3 p.m., and a Discover Pass is required for vehicles. Passes are $10/night or $45/annually.

Have you been to a panel and thought the moderator job would be interesting and fun? Then Programming would love to hear from you. The moderator is the backbone of the panel. It is a great opportunity to work with our amazing panelists. Here are some things that are required:

• Email the panelists in advance to outline the structure of the panel.
• Introduce the panel and move the panelist introductions along smoothly.
• Keep the panel on the right track.
• Move the topic along and allow all the panelists equal time to speak.
• Control the audience Q&A.
• Handle any media that is needed.
• Fill out the feedback form after the panel is finished.

Norwescon’s Film Fest has Begun Accepting Submissions

Norwescon’s Speculative Film Fest will begin accepting submissions on July 1st; submissions will close on Dec 15th.

Norwescon’s Speculative Film Fest is a celebration of science fiction, fantasy, horror and other speculative fiction films. This is a juried festival with over 10 judges representing a wide range of people in the science fiction community. The festival screens about 8 hours of short films each year.

Norwescon’s Speculative Film Fest wants to embrace and foster new voices in speculative fiction, including those of BIPOC, women, and LGBTQ+ creators. We will have judges who represent these voices. BIPOC directors can submit their films to the festival at no charge.
