Old school dram tonight.
Springbank 10, 46% abv, NC, NCFPacked with fruit, citrus, mango, caramel sauce and a wee whiff of smoke. Oily mouthfeel with sweet peaches and melon to add to the other fruit and that Campbeltown funk. A hint of oatiness and grains with touches of vanilla and dry spice. Lovely briney, gingery finish that lasts longer than you expect.
A fantastic and consistent dram, if you can get a hold of it. This was given to me on a sailing trip to Northern Ireland by a friend from Stornoway. I like friends like Hamish 😃

In June I enjoyed a whisky weekend in Campbeltown with my nephew and one of the highlights was the Cadenhead’s Creations Blending Lab Experience. Here you get to make your own unique blend from eight of Cadenhead's Warehouse Casks, undeclosed.
My blend had 250 ml Highland PX, 150 ml Speyside Port, 200 ml Speyside Bourbon and 100 ml Highland Oloroso. NC, NCF, 56.7% abv. Ginger spice on the nose, caramel and whiffs of varnish. Slightly woody on the tongue that develops into soft sweet toffeeness, with sweet dark fruit, figs, dates, raisins and more spice. Long sweet finish.
We did this last year and I think my attempt this year is much improved. If you are lucky enough to spend some time in Campbeltown I would thoroughly recommend this experience. It's one hundred quid for two hours but well worth it.

The fragmentary but intriguing ruins of Saddell Abbey, on the east coast of the Kintyre peninsula north of Campbeltown. It was founded in 1140 and is home to a truly remarkable collection of late medieval grave slabs and effigies. Glenburgie 13, NC, NCF, 57.5% abv warehouse exclusive. Fruity notes with hints of honey and chocolate. Lovely sweetness hits the palate with more fruitiness and gentle cinnamon spice. Medium warm spicy finish.
No, I haven't finished half a bottle in six days! I bought this and split it with my nephew. In turn he bought a Craigellachie 13 yo 55.1% finished in Oloroso to split - and you want to see the colour of that!

Our third "Whisky Dash" in recent years and our second Cadenhead's Whisky Blending Session. Warehouse tasting and visits to the whisky shops at Cadenhead's and Springbank. Wonderful!

Her late Majesty honoured #Campbeltown with an appearance in the clouds last week. This is right up there with Jesus appearing in your toast. So I think we should all stop carping about the monarchy (and Jesus) and just accept their transubstantiative ability to incarnate in material objects.

A few weeks ago my nephew and I took a sailing dash to #Campbeltown where we went to the #Springbank shop and had a Glengyle distillery tour. The highlight of the trip was a "Cadenhead’s Creation – Blending Session", one where you can fancy yourself as a master blender 😂
It costs £100 which may sound a lot but for that you come away with a unique whisky blend of your own making (cask strength), emblazoned with your own label. During the session you have eight 40ml samples to taste and mix (and finish) as well as an etched copita glass (and a Glencairn if you ask nicely), notebook, certificate and other bits and pieces. It's also an absolute hoot!
I would encourage anyone who has the chance to get to Campbeltown to give this a go.

The final night of our three weeks of saling and we are in Lamlash Bay, Arran before heading back to Largs tomorrow.. We've sailed over 400 NM, been as far north as Portree and as far south as Glenarm. We've visited 18 moorings, marinas and anchorages, met some wonderful folks and shared and demolished five bottles of malt.
Tonight I am enjoying a Campbeltown Loch Blended Malt sitting looking over the bay to Holy Isle and watching the boats come and go.
Campbeltown Loch Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 46% abv, NC, NCF, NAS
A bit briny and a bit smoky, orange peel, chocolate and licorice allsorts! An oily mouthful with caramel, vanilla and raisins. Gentle oak spice and black pepper. Slightly dry finish. This is a complex dram and the longer I leave it the more it develops. Blended using all five Campbeltown malt brands. That’s Springbank, Longrow, Hazelburn, Kilkerran and Glen Scotia.
At under £40, it's a real bargain IMO.

You might remember the millennium fad of standing stone monuments, to remind us of our glorious Neolithic past. We had one here in Campbeltown, though it was more of a squat, undersized, underwhelming boulder. More Spinal Tap than Stonehenge.
It has since been replaced with this, which I take to be the hoops of a large whisky barrel. You can see Davaar Island through them if you stand behind the lectern thingy.

What a fantastic day which started with an excellent tour of Kilkerran, a visit to the Cadenhead's shop culminating in a Blending Session at Cadenhead's Blending Lab. The only low point of the day was watching some ahead of us in the queue at Springbank buying a shedload of bottles in the knowledge that they weren't going to drink it but just sell it on. Brazen profiteering which fair rips my knitting 😡.
