It's no secret that I love goats! I came across this painting of goats (hubby is thinking about doing a needlepoint painting of this). Painting: "Seated peasant woman with goats" by #CamillePissarro (1885).
"Painted in the rural hamlet of Eragny, just northwest of Paris, where Pissarro settled from 1884 until his death in 1903, this large and highly finished gouache revisits a subject that the artist had explored in a smaller oil study the previous year (private collection). Like fellow Impressionists Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt, Pissarro eschewed conventional dictates, freely alternating between canvas and paper, and exploring the potential of various media, often in novel combination. Pissarro increasingly (and often desperately) gravitated to paper at this juncture in time as a way to make progress in his art and to make ends meet."

"Snow and Frost at Eragny," Camille Pissarro, 1895.
Pissarro (1830-1903) was born in the Virgin Islands (then a Danish possession), from a French mother and a Portuguese father, both of whom were Jewish, which makes for a rather interesting background.
He's regarded as one of the most important Impressionists, not as much for his artistic style, great as it was, but because he was a central, organizing force in the group, and a calming, paternal presence to many younger artists. Cezanne, Van Gogh, and others, regarded him as a father figure, and he was said to be a warm, kindhearted individual.
He was in his 60s, having some health issues and financial hardships when he painted this, but the serenity here is remarkable. Pissarro was praised for his ability to paint people in natural settings without "artifice or grandeur" and that shows. Also a hint of his anarchist politics; he was a big fan of the common working person, and always depicted them with dignity.

Что-то завораживающее есть в девочке, в еë глазах, еë робости, в еë детстве.
Это Камиль Писсарро нарисовал свою дочку Жанну. 1872 год.
Когда во время франко-прусской войны немецкие солдаты вселились в дом отсутствующего художника, они использовали его картины как коврики для ног.
Тогда он потерял чуть ли не всë, что создал за десятилетия работы.
Жанна умерла в 1948 году в возрасте 67 лет и навсегда осталась девятилетней девочкой с картины своего папы.

"Ce n'est pas du pointillisme mais il s'intéresse à la variation lumineuse, à la vibration de la peinture. Il y a le soleil qui tape sur la bergère, mais au début on comprend rien : il y a du jaune et du vert. Et puis au fur et à mesure, on comprend que les formes se dessinent selon l'intensité lumineuse des touches. C'est la profondeur des touches qui permet de comprendre. Pissarro fait confiance au public pour comprendre."

"Morning Sunlight on the Snow, Eragny sur Epte," Camille Pissaro, 1895.
Pissaro (1830-1903) was a great figure in Western art, having studied with Courbet and later worked alongside Seurat and Signac. He was both an Impressionist and Post-Impressionist, and many of the Impressionists, like Cezanne, Renoir, and Gauguin, looked to him as a father figure; he was not only older, but also warm, wise, and kind.
Pissarro is great at noting people's humanity and depicting them with sympathy, but without pathos, glamour, or artifice; by painting people (especially rural laborers) with naturalistic realism, he communicated a sympathy for them. And, of course, like most of the Impressionists, he loved painting snow scenes.
I don't think he was the BEST Impressionist (I'm torn between Renoir, Monet, and Cassatt), but his works have an elegant and humane quality that sets them apart. Or at least I think so.
