Highway 4 eastbound currently backed up nearly to Whiskey Creek store (5km?) from Cameron Lake Park. Moved as far as Little Qualicum Falls. Currently at 20 minutes since #bchwy4 junction stoplight. Timed my journey on #bchwy4. Westbound from the stoplight at Hwy4/4A junction it was 15min to the lineup that starts just after Cameron Lake Park (I was about 15th in line). We waited for eastbound to come through and started moving at 25min. Angel Rock @ 29min. Start of Eastbound stoppage at 31min. I ended the timer at Cathedral Grove at 35min.
Normally that entire journey would have taken about 15min. I hope they keep the weather station at Angel Rock! 🤓 smile😊

Something excellent may be about to come from this #bchwy4 closure and #cameronlakefire at least for our little fam.
We may head West on Saturday to Pacific Rim National Park and Long Beach. The rumour is that it is incredibly quiet... including the campground! Even with single lane traffic opening Saturday morning that is not likely to change much! 😱 😬 😁 We'll see. 🤞This would be a perfect bookend to last year's #EVCrossCanada to PEI. Hoping.

Looks like they’re nearing completion on the measures to re-open #BCHwy4 to single lane traffic. This morning’s update includes this impressive picture of the two cranes holding the wire mesh that will keep rocks and other debris from falling onto the road. Obviously this is a temporary message just to allow traffic to at least move through in a controlled manner.

As of by Saturday morning the #CameronLakeFire has been listed as Under Control. “A wildfire that will not spread any further due to suppression efforts.”

However, this does not mean it is out. There might be areas that are burning at a low level that could make it difficult for crews to assess the slopes and danger trees.

Hopefully the work can begin to create barriers on the highway that would allow for one lane traffic. That will be the job this week.

There was another rollover of a vehicle (a motor home) on the detour. For people who have never driven this route, or only ever driven a “normal” logging road, there is a surprise. About 40yrs ago, the section between Franklin and Nitinat was paved by the logging companies. It was an experiment. It failed, but the pavement was never removed. It is now extremely lumpy and distorted. If you go at any speed, you will launch, rollover, or lose control. PLEASE GO SLOW (30kph)

ACRD just announced a detour has been created through the Bamfield Road/Nitinat/Lake Cowichan route for passenger vehicles and trucks 14,500kg.
Essential travel only. Be prepared. It is the logging road I mentioned before.

BC Wildfire has finally updated their online information as of 7:17AM today. The fire, which they call Cameron Bluffs, remains out of control (ie. “A wildfire that is continuing to spread and is not responding to suppression efforts.”) and has grown from 20 to 25ha.

#CameronLakeFire this morning. Citizen reports have it 50ft from #bchwy4. I just drove through on my way to work. Beaufort Park is closed. Looks like they have a pump and fire lines set up that go across the road (somehow) and up into the bush. The smoke is incredibly thick but mostly going away from the lake and road up into the valley. There has only been one other fire in living memory near here. It was on the other side of the lake. It was NOT in May/June. It should be raining. #ClimateChaos

Large amount of smoke from the #CameronLakeFire now moving up the Cameron River Valley at the foot of Mt Arrowsmith and may track into the Alberni Valley. Likely that smoke will be affecting visibility on #bchwy4 No update yet on the bcwildfire website for today.
