Call For Submissions: Mirador Artistries Collective

Mirador Artistries Collective are a recently established collective of writers and artists with an interest in promoting the Portuguese Canadian cultural experience through short stories, non-fiction, poetry, and art to explore Luso Diaporic themes with readers of Milénio.

They are welcoming submissions from writers and artists who wish to share their work with MAC for possible publication in a monthly ‘Mirador’ feature in the Milénio newspaper. The first publication date was September 11, 2026 (see below). We thank Manuel da Costa and the team of Milénio for opening this space where we can share our work.

We invite writers, poets, and storytellers—voices new and old—to contribute to the Luso Diasporic Literary Project, a celebration of the Portuguese diaspora and its many lived experiences. This project seeks work that reflects the textures of migration, memory, language, belonging, displacement, inheritance, and reinvention across generations and geographies. Let’s talk about the Portuguese diaspora experience—intimate or collective, historical or contemporary, rooted or in motion.

The season of Advent is almost here, and we want your voice in our Fourth Quarter edition.

Theme: Belonging and Advent — A Season of Waiting, A Season of Displacement

Long before Christ was born, Mary and Joseph were already on the move, forced by census decree to travel while she was heavy with child. Soon after his birth, the Holy Family fled as refugees into Egypt to escape a ruler's violence. Advent is not only a season of quiet waiting. It is a season that remembers what it means to wait without a home.

We are inviting essays, reflections, sermons, and pastoral stories that explore Advent through this lens: displacement, hope, hospitality, and what it means to belong when you have nowhere to lay your head.

Whether you are clergy, a lay minister, an activist, or simply someone with something to say, we want to hear from you.

We want you to send us your best, most polished, most beautiful work for Issue 12!

Here’s what we’re looking for:

• Playful and heartfelt poetry
• Nail-biting, suspenseful, and exciting short stories
• Artwork full of imagination
• Funny or adventurous comics
• Unexpected jokes and riddles
• Delicious recipes that you and your family like to make
• Challenging and fun games with Christian themes

Guidelines (for ages 17 and younger)

Poetry: 1–3 poems (any length).

Short Stories: 1 story, no longer than 2,000 words.

Art & Photography: 1–3 photos of your artwork.

Comics: 1–2 photos of your comics/comic strip.

Jokes: 1-3 jokes, with credit (if you didn’t make it up)

Recipes: 1-2 recipes, with credit (if you didn’t make it up)

Heart of Flesh Literary Journal is OPEN for submissions!

We are looking for poetry, flash fiction, short stories, creative nonfiction, and visual art for our upcoming issue, and Christian testimonies and book reviews for our blog!

Issue 16:

We prefer literary work, but we accept all genres of poetry, flash fiction, short fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art & photography. Genres we accept include sci-fi, magical realism, historical fiction, etc. Just make sure the work includes a Christian theme.

Send us:

• Poetry: 1–3 poems at a time (no length limits).
• Flash Fiction: 1–3 pieces at a time (700 words per piece, max).
• Short Fiction: 1 piece at a time (4,000 words max).
• Creative Nonfiction: 1 piece at a time (4,000 words max).
• Art & Photography: 1–4 pieces at a time, preferably with artist statement and details such as size and medium.

Christian Testimonies:

We are looking for Christian testimonies to publish on our blog.

A Christian testimony is the true story of how you personally came to know and follow Jesus. It often includes (but is not limited to):

1. the story of your life before Christ
2. the story of how the Lord saved you
3. a short reflection of your new life in Christ

Word count: 500 – 4,000 words

Testimonies may be previously published.

A selection of testimonies will be posted weekly during the month of October on our blog.

We are looking for reviews of Christian-themed books (fiction, nonfiction, essay, poetry) to publish on our blog during the months October and November.

The Fourth Quarter edition of Convergent Streams is now accepting submissions, and the theme carries forward the conversation we began this quarter on immigration and belonging.

Theme: Belonging and Advent

Advent has always been a season of waiting. But it is worth remembering that the Holy Family themselves knew displacement intimately. Mary and Joseph traveled while pregnant under census decree with nowhere to lay their heads. And soon after, the newborn Christ became a refugee, carried into Egypt to escape violence at home.

This Advent, we want to sit with that truth. What does it mean to wait in hope while displaced? What does it mean to find belonging in a manger, in exile, on the road? We are looking for reflections, essays, sermons, and pastoral stories that hold Advent and immigration together, not as separate themes, but as one continuous witness.

We welcome submissions from clergy, lay ministers, activists, and anyone moved to write on this theme.

Announcement: New Reading Period for the Fall Issue

Hello to all the writers, poets, and artists, and to our Heart of Flesh family,

We have a new reading period this year for our Fall issue! Our submission window will open on July 20th (in two weeks!) and will close on September 20th. Our editor-in-chief will be going on a mission trip at the end of September into October, and she needs a little extra time to go over submissions. The issue is still scheduled to be released in November.

We’re so excited to read your work. If you feel led, please pray for our editor — for the submission process, for the mission trip, and for the wisdom, discernment, and blessing from God to cultivate an issue that will glorify Him above all else.

May God bless and guide you all on your creative journeys, and we hope to see your work in the coming weeks!
