After I won two flats and a box of random paper thingies at yesterday’s North Star Auction in Mandan, North Dakota, a dude approached who was mighty interested in this little 1920 calendar (he knew exactly where it was in the box, and it was deep). I told him I hadn’t gone through things yet, but now I’m curious. I’ll assume it had a little cardboard easel back at one point.

Thanks all, I went and did a bit of reading based on your recommendations, and I have a much better sense now of the calendar territory. (and SuperProductivity, not exactly a calendar but interesting)
And then... When I was imagining the different options in use, I realised that _none_ of them was exactly what I wanted, because of the frustrating smallness of a laptop screen when I want to look at the whole year! What I was actually craving was a physical year-planner display which can be hung on a wall. Non-electronic solution :-)
Thinking it over, I also remembered I can supplement that with reminders from Remind. I use that for recurring things already, like "renew library books" or "put bins out", but there's nothing to stop me putting in a few one-off events as well if it would be useful.
So thanks for the food for thought assisting my thought-experiments, and I shall bookmark this thread in case I do need one of the other ones later :-)

• without reciprocally showing Google the rest of what's in my schedule?
I'm not sure if that's a thing!
Asking because I currently have a work role where Google Calendar is the chosen one, and I don't like the idea of telling Google my personal business (more than it already knows), but sometimes it would be useful to see all of it together.
Bonus points if it lets you select event colours from a colour picker. I do like a nice colour code :-)

I'm going to talk about calendars again.
Web pages and popualr books often state that calendars can be solar or lunar, and lunisolar calendars combine both types. This is exactly backwards. Every polity with any sort of state-like organisation starts off with a lunisolar calendar, which may drop the lunar correlation to become purley solar. (There is only one purely lunar calendar, and it too is descended from a lunisolar ancestor).

So guess who wrote a convoluted date comparison conditional instead of using `Temporal.ZonedDateTime.compare()` like an intelligent human being and ended up hitting an edge case where future scheduled calls started getting cleaned off the database instead of past ones?
I’ll give you a hint: has two thumbs and his name is Aral 🤦♂️
Anyway, just restored things from yesterday’s backup and sent a direct message to everyone scheduled for a Gaza Verified video verification call apologising for the confusion and explaining what happened.
Moral of the story: stick to the Temporal API and use its methods if you’re implementing anything even remotely non-trivial involving dates, especially if there are timezones involved. (You can use a Temporal API polyfill in Node.js – I’ve been using temporal-polyfill.)
Now I’m going to expire for the evening.

If you are confused about your schedule, here's a summary. The PDF schedules provided by the City of Toronto and Circular Materials are both correct. Some map areas have changed their pickup schedules: for example, Parkdale used to be Wed Day 2 and they have now switched to Wed Day 1. The PDF versions of the maps show these changes correctly. But the mobile app and website lookup function don't.
Folks affected by Day switches should have received special printed mail notices about these changes, but some didn't.
One disappointing note about the PDF calendars: while those on the city's site are visually identical to those on Circular Materials site, the ones used by Circular Materials are inaccessible and untagged. Why don't they use the same tagged versions that are on the city site? Who knows! Does Circular Materials even know about the AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act)? No they don't.
