  1. Often we’ve communicated with other #BikeAdvocates by phone, or online, long before meeting in person. That was the case with Paola Berthoin of Carmel Valley, and it was such a joy to meet her face to face on April 17 at the Fridays #FarmersMarket in Monterey (bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour).

Paola, an #artist, has biked 20,267 miles, mostly local miles. For Paola, her bike is “a perfect alternative mode of #transportation!”

BTW, we share her concern—and that of #CalBike—"Don’t Punish E-Bikes for the E-Moto Problem”; take action: calbike.org/ab1557ab1942/

Those of you who followed @bikemonterey back when we were on the bird site, 2009-2022, may recall hearing Paola's name from us there, or on our website (e.g., bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up on bikemonterey.org/resources/bic).

Born in #London, England, she came to Carmel Valley in 1965 with her mother and three sisters. Learn more about Paola Fiorelle Berthoin: paolafiorelleberthoin.com/about

  6. Did you miss April 6 webinar from #California #Bicycle Coalition with April Webster and Wesley Bexton of #Caltrans, "When #Streets Fail: Designing #Bike #Infrastructure for #Heat, #Flooding, and Usability”?

We found it interesting and very important. "A #BikeLane that floods every winter isn't infrastructure. A #sidewalk that bakes at 110 degrees by noon isn't usable, and a #street that only works for part of the day isn't really working.” The info on #trees alone will interest many of you.

Later this week, #CalBike will post webinar recording, with closed captioning. Check for it at calbike.org/events/webinar-ser or on CalBike’s Youtube channel.

If you’re able, we urge you to register for 2026 biennial California Bicycle Summit, April 23-24 in Sacramento: bikemonterey.org/april-23-24-2

“Every ‘ebike’ sold in California would be unlawful for sale as an ebike in Europe. Our motors are allowed 750 watts, but in Europe, only 250.” —John Maa, MD, emergency trauma surgeon & ebike safety advocate

On Feb 13 “local officials gathered in Walnut Creek to support legislation that would require registration of Class 2 & 3 e-bikes.”

Re: e-motorcycle ridden by 16-yr-old Cash Krawetz, who died after his e-moto crashed in Half Moon Bay on Feb 9: "That’s what parents are buying 11-14-yr-olds."—Alan Kalin, #SFBA bike safety advocate. Al found 70 e-motos & only 12 regular bicycles at Stone Valley Middle School.

“Many of today’s ‘e-bikes’ aren’t really bicycles at all."

  18. Comment by Representative Sam Graves, chair of House #Transportation & #Infrastructure Committee, about #Amazon & EVs makes sense. sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1156
But we weren’t happy he also said the following in that Nov 5 interview re: proposals for 2026 federal highway bill. Why? Keep in mind that many highways also serve as community surface streets.

Rep Graves said: “It’s gonna be a traditional highway bill — that means building roads & bridges, laying asphalt, pouring concrete. We’re not gonna be spending money on murals in train stations, or bike paths, or walking paths. We’re going to spend money on traditional infrastructure, that’s roads & bridges.”

We encourage people throughout USA to contact Rep Graves, as well as your own representative in Congress; and let them know you want #CompleteStreets—not streets designed only for users of motor vehicles.

Californians, #CalBike has a related action page. Do note their typo; Graves said murals IN not murals AND train stations. calbike.org/pave-first-and-ask

  26. Sept 28-Oct 1 is California Chapter of American Planning Association conference, in Monterey County. apacalifornia.org/ Conference theme is "WAVES OF CHANGE: Reconnecting #Communities.” Two of 13 mobile workshops are promoted as being via bicycle, and there's a bike in conference banner, and @ 1:00 in “APA California 2025 Conference Hype Video.” In Feb we were invited by a Santa Cruz County based planner to serve on a proposed bike-related panel at the conference; we urged him to instead invite #CalBike’s executive director or policy director (and he did). He later reported that his panel submission was rejected by conference organizers. :(

  40. May 2025 is the 16th Anniversary of Bicycling Monterey, Monterey County’s Local Partner of the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike.

Our favorite #BikeAdvocacy task is direct outreach by bicycle! The 16th anniv gallery bikemonterey.org/16th-annivers is a sampling of people we met each of the past 16 years.

Among them: #PeopleWhoBike for #transportation, recreation, who bike to #protest rallies, bike to #FarmersMarkets, bike to #surf, #BikeToSchool and #BikeAndRide for a #DadAndDaughter date, #BikeToWork (and yes, pedaling in a business #suit is no problem for him), #HandCycle bike to exercise the #dog, bike to #travel long distances / #BicycleTouring.
