Continuing the conversion of my old music from the #Cakewalk format I used in 1997, I found this little march where I tried to somewhat manage an instrumental crescendo (even with Tubular Bells!). Harmonically-wise is a very classic and there's nothing to write home about. However, I quite liked a passage where the piano does a little scale. As usual, the #Proteus2 plays most of the tracks #MIDI #1997 #music

I found this little converter utility from the old #Cakewalk .wrk files to standard MIDI files .mid. I could retrieve my compositions dating back from 1996-1998 and import them in Logic Pro 😍 I still have the MIDI rig I had a the time (#Proteus/2 and #GEM #S2), so I only have to tweak some details to get results that are quite similar to what I listened back then. Kudos to the author of this little open source gem, that worked flawlessly for me: https://wrk2mid.sourceforge.io

Anybody have any thoughts on a USB audio interface? Windows no longer sees my Akia EIE and #Cakewalk doesn't like ASIO4All and it won't pick up the MIDI either so I think a new interface is required - 2 in/ 2 out minimum and I'm running everything through a 4 bus desk.

Discovered this free DAW plugin manager. I've been looking for something like this for a while. I am pleased to say it works really well and clawed back 26GB of space on my internal drive!
It doesn't delete the plugin, but offloads them to another location that you specify (if you like) I moved mine to an external drive. Plugoff stores with them the original location, so you can reverse the process on an individual plugin basis, or in bulk.

I haven't tooted for ages! (sorry?). I've been writing #music . Just before Christmas I mapped it all out in the DAW, laid some guide guitars and drums. My old drum module had multiple outputs. The current one only outputs in stereo so I'm laying down tracks in the DAW for kick, snare, toms, cymbals & ride/hi-hat which gives me greater control in the mix and better control over the reverb. It's also easier to export but it's really time consuming

After few tweaks to sound design and mixing, I can now call this done. I replaced the piano with something more in-keeping, without actually going vocal on it.

It's now all just using Surge XT synth, except for the toms.

Thanks to the British summer weather I've been able to record all the first guitar parts for my latest project. Now the sun is out I'll set the project aside and return with fresh ears before I decide what to lay down next.

It's been a while since I tried making music. Now that I've built up a collection of orchestral sounds I've designed (for Surge synthesizer), I can make more ambitious pieces.

This is Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

I could keep chipping away at this, but it's good enough as a demo of unexpected shenanigans.

@thatguyoverthere I have. That was quite awhile ago though, and not with the VSTs I know about now. Would that be better than #Cakewalk?

I remember about a decade ago I tried #LMMS on #WindowsXP I think, but the built-in VSTs SUCKED and I had limited internet access so I couldn’t easily install and test other VSTs.

I should just buy the two programs I’ve been trying to find free alternatives for but lack great replacements, #VirtualDJ and #FLStudio. #MIXXX is okay but slightly janky and doesn’t fully support my controller, and #Cakewalk seems okay but is lacking measure lines in the region viewer or whatever so I think that can make it hard for me to make sure that my loops and notes are onbeat. (It also lacks some of #FLStudio’s effects but I’m sure that if I had the time and energy to spend I could find free plugins but, well, I don’t lol)

I have the money, I’m not really spending it on anything else.

@thor They got bought by #Bandlab. Apparently they’re supposed to make #Cakewalk paid instead of free in the future, but the old installer will always work so IDRC 🤷🏾‍♂️

So far it seems better than #LMMS so I’m happy

@thor LOL I can’t believe I missed that…heard good things about that one. I just started messing around in #Cakewalk myself.

With #Bandcamp becoming another victim of capitalist shortsightedness, let's remember to pour one out specifically for the fact that they took up #Cakewalk 's #Sonar software after it had been abandoned by Gibson, and released the best version of it since Sonar 4, FOR FREE.
