Just above the Lecht ski centre, it was interesting to see an area of deliberately raising the water table to waterlog the peat, several different techniques are being used:

    1. Turf piled up on the downslope to create a pond.
    2. A series of small turf dams to slow the flow.
    3. Wooden boards used to create dams to slow the flow.

And matting to protect the ground and retain vegetation.

  6. Good weather has come back for a while, but still a cold wind. Headed up Càrn Mòr, a Corbett above the Lecht ski centre. The ski infrastructure is always grim, so avoided it and found a landrover track heading up from about a km beyond the ski centre.
Lots of boggy peat groughs, but easy walking higher up.

  12. Angered to find this high in @Rothiemurchus
forest today, below the path to Gleann Eanaich. Built fairly recently with axe and saw. Dismantled it as best I could. @Cairngorms

  18. Brink of extinction’: European wildcats avoided mixing with domestic cats for 2,000 years
The Saving Wildcats conservation breeding programme has conducted the first release of wildcats to the #CairngormsNationalPark, #Scotland in 2023.

New archaeological and genetic evidence could transform what we know about the history of cats in Europe.

  24. Hello. We got down to -6.3 here last night. The lowest I’ve seen in a wee while. It’s braw out today and I’d love a photo day out, but I need to conserve my energy for a trip away next week. 🙁 Today I’m sharing a Loch Morlich view. It may be busy and easy to reach, but it is still magnificent. Highest beach in the UK.

  25. Morning Mastodon. Or the bit of it that can see this. For today’s photo for #NationalTreeWeek an iconic shot from the Cairngorms National Park. It might be a Scots Pine - the only truly native UK pine - but I’m not 100% sure. #Scotland #scottishhighlands #CairngormsNationalPark #PineTree #TreeRoots #CaledonianForest

  26. Hello there. The photo I’m posting today was taken on 16th November a few years ago
in the Cairngorms National Park. I called it ‘snow on the tops’ but this year, so far, there’s been none. It’s worrying. Cairngorms is the only alpine-arctic environment in the UK. If it disappears, a lot goes with it. #Scotland #ScottishHighlands #CairngormsNationalPark #SnowontheMountain #ClimateCrisis #PhotoOfTheDay #NoFilter
