First issue: my connecting tabs were too thin vs the cut dept so are cut through on at least one of the outer edges, note to self: account for cut-through and bulk tabs out a bit next time if this time fails.
Outer has cut fine, inner now will be the tricky one...
Bunged a CCTV unit in next to it so I can see whars going on from the 19°C warmth of the study!

Been having a pain of a time trying to get etching/pocketing and vcarving to work for me on Linux.
Downloaded the free trial of Vectric VCarve and it was a doddle to do what I wanted... but then I need to pay for it to get the actual gcode out. (Which is fair enough if course, but that's £330 at least. It's not a bad price for the software IMO, but it's also ... £330...)
Guess I'll go back to banging my head against the OSS options.

The cut-out edge is close enough to "finish" quality for my needs. Huge difference to the first attempt with a normal 2-flute upcut bit running 200mm/s and 12000rpm: https://toot.ale.gd/@yvan/112430779482233883
The engraving on this was just the closest SVG I had to hand and it needs some cleaning up really.

#chipout achieved!
Some tweaks, but also a new single flute o-cut type spiral upcut bit. No melted plastic, will see it properly once the engraving run is done.
This is a 2mm bit, running 9000rpm, and 300mm/s travel. Cutting 1mm extruded acrylic in 0.2mm passes.

My first ever #CNCrouter thing! The engraving part worked pretty well, I'd just say I could refine the vectors a tad. This was done with a little V bit.
The cutting out of the disc of acrylic was a disaster though. It bunched up on the bit, and ended up "rubbing" through the plastic making a sort of rough frosted cut. This was done with an upcut endmill bit.
So something to work out there... slower speed? Different sort of bit? Deeper cuts each pass?

A friend gave me a desktop CNC router. It’s small but it’s good to learn basics. My problem was finding a project to make on such a small machine. It dawned on me that a small CNC could cut a compact wallet from the stock around my shop. So, here’s my rendering of a wallet. It was a great CAD exercise for me and now I’m learning the CAM side of the process with something small and practical. I even pre milled the No 4 screw holes. #woodworking #cadcam #cas #cnc
