In the heart of the Mojave National Preserve, a Cactus Wren perches on a prickly pear cactus. This spot has been my white whale photographically. The butte in the background is in a lush valley filled with yucca, cholla, and prickpear cactus. Unfortunately I have not been able to convince a single bird to pop its head out for a photo in that spot. Here on the other side of the valley, the birds are more plentiful and confiding. This big ol #saguaro #cactus is home to a lot of stuff, most notably #cactuswren and #gilded #flicker. With all the recent rains we’ve had the arms were too heavy to support the damaged trunk. This old gal was centuries old and just crashed down sometime this week. The arms can weigh 1-3000 pounds and the entire body can hold 200+ gallons of water. Very cool plants. Also fell across part of the trail, so instead of windfall spruce and fir I have ancient cacti windfall to deal with #biketooter
