New Zealand's first overseas cable link, to Australia, was opened here at Cable Bay on 21 February 1876, establishing a connection with the worldwide telegraph network via Sydney. This new service meant communications to Europe took only four days instead of up to six months for letters.
Cable Bay is a bay and small settlement north-east of #Whakatū #Nelson. I wonder how it looked back in 1876!
