Back on my stain journey lol.

I’ve ordered a different (allegedly) “non-yellowing” finish, and have been trying and comparing stains. It’s interesting how different stains look pretty much the same in one kind of lighting, and then quite different in another.

This is with my current finish over some of them. The new finish won’t arrive until Tuesday. Fingers crossed I can figure it all out before Friday, as the fridge arrives Saturday!

I think what I’m going for is something close to this cabinet color, perhaps a little more brown and less yellow in hue (warning: this is an AI image). It may still work okay-ish with our cool brown floors. It will make them more grey-looking, but overall I think it will be acceptable.
Of course, everything just magically *works* in AI-generated interior design. It’s because they all incorporate that angelic soft glow from the Realm of the Fae.

I know they don’t look extreme in this lighting, but in bright morning light (our kitchen faces East) the finished side looks GARISHLY saturated.
I already have PTSD from how orange our floors look, having ambered over the years compared to when we first bought the house, when they were a nice neutral SANE shade of pale tan oak.

So, something I didn’t account for because I haven’t finished anything in a while (heh) is how much DARKER and MORE AMBER the urethane finish makes the stain colors. 😩

Most of these stains were very close to what I wanted in hue, saturation, and LRV until I put the clear coat finish on top (left side of each piece). Now they are too dark and too golden for what I’m trying to achieve.

And here’s how the stain looks once it’s dried. The next step is to put a coat of finish on it (10% sheen, which is quite flat) and see how that affects the color. The piece on the left has another stain color on the bottom, and a bit of the raw wood visible at the top. The piece on the right has just the one stain color being tested on its top half.

And here’s how it looks freshly-applied (still wet) on my two solid wood stain sample pieces. The piece on the left is actually for our bed. The piece on the right is for the cabinet trim in the kitchen. When they are dry, it’s likely that they will look different in certain lights. That’s been my experience so far, at least.

Here is my latest stain attempt. The 1st photo is the pure Light Walnut stain on its own. When I tried this mixed only with white and the clear base, it came out with a slightly green tint on my bleached white oak. 😫

So to cancel out the green and add more warmth, I’ve been experimenting with adding various ratios of red, yellow, and orange. Adding just one drop can subtly change the undertones of the stain.

Hey woodworking/cabinetry folks!

What are the go-to CAD software these days? My brother-in-law is starting a cabinetry business. He's been building for a decade but heading off on his own now, and trying to get a handle on the design end outside of pencil / paper.

So: best CAD software for cabinetry? He's open to subscriptions or one-off licenses, mostly want to set him up for the long run.

I'm sure there are considerations to be made for a professional business vs individual.

Well after 35 hours in the shop working on this, I have the vast majority of the construction done. Left to do is the drawer front fitting, trim the two open ends, and make the leg structure.

Some details of the joinery used for the build- all dados, grooves and tenons, along with mitres with dominos for alignment. The first two were cut with a router and straight edge, the tenons with table saw. #MCM #woodworking #cabinetry #woodwork #carpentry #maker

Working on more cabinet doors. Didn't show how they were put together before; they're just half-lapped. The only tricky part is remembering to factor the half lap into the length... which I keep forgetting.

I started building these during the early days of the pandemic. My designs and skills have improved vastly since then.

This one is based on a design from the latest #GardenRail magazine. Last week this was all scrap lumber in my garage.

Island is finally in its place. There will be another 3 feet extension that will serve as small dining table. So next item on agenda is to build two legs and skirting to support the total 6 feet countertop. Right now we are thinking granite or quartz that looks similar to our current kitchen countertop. That starts tomorrow.

All cabinets are 3/4" thick maple ply and with cabinets leveled and attached to one another it is alreadyfairly heavy and hard to move. With countertop in place, it is not going to go anywhere. So we are going to leave it technically floating. Attaching it to floor would have been a chore given that floor is tiled.

T-slots successfully cut for double demountable hinges. AND, they're all cut on the correct face, which is something I was sure I would mess up. #Carpentry #KitchenRemodel #Woodworking #Cabinetry

Spent way too much time trying to figure out how to cut the slots for these stupid 1980s "Amerock double demountable" hinges for my kitchen cabinet refresh. Took some trial and error, but finally found a good way to set up guides and stops on the router table for repeatable, relatively safe cuts. 2020 extrusion and some t-slot knobs to the rescue.

These hinges went out of style decades before YouTube, so I have no idea how they were cut back in the day. #Carpentry #KitchenRemodel #Cabinetry

We put up our first wall! And mounted two of the cabinets!

I learned how to do some cabinetry and made some toe kick boxes for the cabinets 😎 next we're putting in toe kick DRAWERS

Also got my first outlet box installed--inside my media cabinet/desk! Y'all won't believe how cool my WFH setup is about to be in this bus...
