  3. The Bottle Talk: Chile’s red wine story

Chile has a confession to make. For most of the twentieth century, it was quietly growing one of Bordeaux’s most noble grape varieties and calling it Merlot. Not out of deception, but out of honest ignorance. The grape had arrived in…

  4. This single-vineyard Cab Franc from the Finger Lakes starts with minor green notes. The veggies are more aggressive on the nose, not offputting. Then, it evolves into a controlled, olive flavor profile.

The light and bright demeanor (with a touch of tannin) mostly makes it lively, persistent and most of all--silky & surprisingly fresh with a juicy finish. It's on the thinner side, but it's beautifully balanced, a perfect food wine. 12.8%. $40-ish

  9. Why is it so hard to find Cabernet Franc in New England? I first tried it in the Maritimes, and then I found some at a winery in the Finger Lakes region. Wikipedia says it’s one of the twenty most popular styles worldwide. Apparently not near me! It’s not my favorite, but I will say it’s underrated. Heavy on deep grape and black currant, with notes of white or black pepper (I’m not a super-taster).

  10. This 2013 Caya Cab Franc is pretty wonderful at age 11. There's a touch of olive, predictably, but also a backbone, some bite on the finish and an impression of depth. Listed at 13%, this lacks for little and delivers plenty. It's very impressive today, with plenty of time left, and reasonably priced in newer vintages (sub-$40). #wine #winesofnewyork #cabernetfranc @wolffer

  11. First step on my search for a red wine with notes of green tomatoes: 2012 Domaine de la Cotelleraie Les Montils Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, based on the suggestion from the amazing @marksquires

Not exactly what I was looking for, but delicious nonetheless: nose of smoke with a hint of violets, and the palate of green pepper, cinnamon, some sour cherries, maybe a hint of licorice, and something close to jalapeños on the finish. Quite fascinating!
