  11. One more Commodore 116 keyboard screw conversion - check.

It looks good, but it isn't perfect. 2 or 3 screws can't be tightened fully. Maybe the piece moved slightly. The tolerances are very tight, the screw is M1.7 in size, and the drill-bit is 1.3mm... If it wobbles by a fraction of a mm, it can already cause this problem.

They're still holding though, and with all screws in, it feels solid. It will be good enough, I think. cc: @iszell

  12. Oh no, they're multiplying!

One of these Commodore 116 doesn't belong to me, and overall it's in a much better nick than mine. Works perfectly, and looks very unmolested - but of course someone had a go at the keyboard already, and some of the plastic pins holding it together are already broken. No surprises there.

I will do the screw-conversion on it, now that I can, and have the tools for it, and then we'll see what else.

  13. Many hours later… it’s far from perfect but I’m happy I did it (some major discoloration on the backside, some of my supports were very unfortunately placed so I had to do a bit of filing but it works). Closeups are too embarrassing. I’m still a 3d printing noob. 😅 #C16 #C116 #Plus4 #Cartridge

  14. I built a C264 Magic Cart (which is a Magic Desk style cartridge for the C16/116/Plus4 which can access up to 2MB of software from EPROMs). It’s very cool indeed!

  15. More "extremely exciting" Commodore 116 keyboard work:

Instead of fixing the broken keypads, I decided to replace a part that I just couldn't stand looking at, but otherwise worked - the very dirty and butcher-soldered keyboard cable. But apart from the eye sore, I also wanted to make the keyboard detachable again. Perfect excuse.

So here we go. A pair of Adafruit pitch adapters, a flat flex cable, some soldering. Looks better, and it's working.

  16. One more photo of the keyboard frame after the surgery. Almost all holes went in the middle, except one. 😅 But that still holds its screw just fine.

And no sign of any modification is visible from the other side. Perfect.

  17. Commodore 116 keyboard repair and modding in progress. 😨

    Step 1:
Drilling the plastic rivets, and making tiny screw holes in the case, using a 1.4mm drill bit. The drill stop is set up in a way, that one can't drill through the plastic.

    Step 2:
"It's cheaply built keyboard smoke! Don't breath this!"

    Step 3:
Using 22 tiny M1.7x4mm screws in place of the rivets. The keyboard can be freely dis- and reassembled now.

  18. Commodore 116 "project" update:

During the week, a new-to-me TED, an 8501 CPU, and a PLA arrived from evilBay. All of them new-old-stock, allegedly. They're in a good external condition, no signs of previous use on the pins, so probably true. I want to believe. 😅 But more importantly, they do actually work.

Now onto the difficult part - the keyboard repair.

  19. Now let's have a quick peek into our own C116! Which is in much better condition than that extreme refurb one. But ours also has some dead or almost dead keys. Well... rubber membrane keyboards...

  20. And here it is, the latest addition to my collection.
The #commodore #C116 in all its beauty and box.
Luckily the seller at least secured the psu from dangling around in the box.
It even came with two games and a learning course.
Haven't tested it yet, I hope it works.🤞

  21. @deanjimmy @root42 Looking into it more, I agree that the #C116 was a focused #ZXSpectrum competitor in features and price, but it was several years too late. The #C16 and #Plus4 seem like they were driven by post-Tramiel #Commodore management wanting to do something more with the platform than just an ultra-cheap game computer.

  22. If you like the Commodore 264 series you should really visit the homepage of László Rajcsányi (WLS). He ported a lot of the old Commodore 16 classics for the Gameboy & Gameboy Color. Awesome work and a great time travel back to better days.
