As early as 2 years ago, many people in #Germany and #Europe felt that #BigTech ’s internet platforms did not live up to the claim of being #socialmedia. Many were appalled by the #hatespeech, #incitement, #cyberbullying, and #disinformation being spread there.
Our action alliance first reached out to #universities to propose withdrawing from #X and adopting #Mastodon. We believe the #Fediverse platforms are much better suited for #SciComm or, more broadly, for substantive discourse aimed at protecting and preserving our #democracy. Other initiatives have since emerged, such as #ByeByeElon, #HelloQuitX, #LeaveX, and #SaveSocial.

We’ve already seen some initial success: around 150 #academic institutions in Germany are active on Mastodon and have +157k followers there

Übermorgen, am 4.11.25, treffen sich die Mitglieder der #Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) zur Herbst-Versammlung in #Osnabrück.
Die #HRK hat sich in den letzten Jahren vielfach für den Schutz unserer #Demokratie und #Rechtsstaatlichkeit ausgesprochen, s. z.B.

Doch waren das nur schöne Worte für #Sonntagsreden?

Wir haben die HRK in unserem Appell vom letzten Jahr aufgefordert, sich für den Rückzug der #Hochschulen von #X und für die Nutzung von #Mastodon und anderer Fedi-Dienste einzusetzen.
Tatsächlich wurden gewisse Fortschritte erzielt: aufgrund unserer und anderer Kampagnen wie #Byebyeelon, #WissXit, @HelloQuitteX, @leavex und #SaveSocial haben viele Hochschulen den #eXit gemacht, und fast 60 der 270 Mitglieder der HRK betreiben eigene Mastodon-Accounts.

Doch da ist noch Luft nach oben.
Wir wünschen der HRK eine erfolgreiche Tagung, und dass sie die Hochschulen beim laufenden Umbau der #sozialenMedien hin zu #UnisInsFediverse engagiert unterstützt.

To our friends in the #USA, we say that we are alarmed at how the new #USpolicy is attacking #science. We are trying to build decentralized and independent #socialnetworks to make our research institutions and democracy resilient to attacks from #autocrats and #hostilitytoscience.

- 4 initiatives started in Germany: #ByeByeElon, #LeaveX (although started by a Brazilian/Italian immigrant), efforts by several universities and @Freiheitsrechte suing X
- 2 In the Netherlands: #Detox and #MakeSocialsSocialAgain with great campaigns
- 1 in France: with #HelloQuitX and their app to help people find alternatives on Mastodon or BlueSky
- 1 in Spain: #juntas involving 120 civil society organizations
- 1 in Italy: lots of energy from Ban X in Europe

In my impression, one notable difference in the current X-odus compared to 2022 is the significantly higher number of profiles linked to social movements. This shift seems tied to the excellent work being done by initiatives like #helloquitx (France), #juntas (Spain), and #ByeByeElon (Germany). It's also fueled by the growing European discontent with the influence of a dangerous oligarch.
