It is probably about car dependency, car-centered areas. Like in the US where in many towns without a car one would struggle to do anything: getting to the grocery store, getting back from the store, reaching the other river bank as many bridges are motor vehicles only.

People can’t live without cars in such places. Even food banks have huge lines of cars, four "lanes". Some homeless people drive cars as well. Imagine the closest grocery store being 1 hour walking distance away, and the weather may be extremely hot/cold.

Many such areas don’t even have sidewalks or anything for walking at all. At the same time so called "jay-walking" is prohibited by law. The term "jaywalking" actually was invented by the cars lobby in the early 20th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaywalking
Moving around by walking is extremely inconvenient, dangerous, taking ridiculous amounts of time, basically incompatible with everyday activities.

Also the parking lots, roads, intersections take up huge chunks of the city. Consider how much longer it takes to walk somewhere compared to what it could be without all these. Urban areas could look very different if they were human-centered and Points Of Interest were packed tightly.

And the bigger the city, the more space car infrastructure takes up. More lanes, wider intersections, parking lots can have up to many thousands spots, highways, freeways, interchanges of ridiculous sizes and shapes.

The topic is huge, what I mentioned is just the tip. Think of what you see around every day. Also all the noise. And danger it brings to everyone, not just drivers. The number of so called "accidents", another convenient term for the horrible things that happen everyday.

The areas which are pedestrian-friendly, bicycle friendly, have public transportation tend to have happier residents, more attraction points, more small businesses, more street life, way better air quality, less noise among other benefits.
Also social connections and interaction happen there and not on a 4-lane highway.

I liked the performance of this ebike with its small 16'' wheels, I felt more the stones than in my other bike, but nothing very different, the most different thing was only the riding position and assistance controls.

Recuperando la forma física. Hoy he vuelto a hacer ciclismo urbano, para mejorar el cardio evitando lesiones. Han caído 50 Km (la puñetera pulsera de actividad se ha trabado y me lo ha contabilizado en dos sesiones). Haré una o dos sesiones más de ciclismo urbano y después volveré al camino a hacer el cabra (un poco) -

Llevaba 4 semanas sin salir en bicicleta. Hoy he hecho una ruta urbana, y además con menos kilómetros de lo habitual y me he dado cuenta del desastre de mi forma física... cansado y dolor la parte interna de mi rodilla izquierda. Esto no me pasaba cuando tenía 25 años... 😂🚴🚴‍♀️

Por cierto, en ambos mandos de cambios, la ventanita donde se ve el piñón/plato que se lleva puesto están translucidos en lugar de estar transparentes. ¿Alguien sabe cómo arreglar esto? Gracias !!

He puesto en la bicicleta ORBEA los pedales con calapies que tenía en mi MTB. Me he dado un paseo de 1 hora y se va de maravilla con estos pedales. Se va configurando como mi bicicleta urbana de paseo.

Hoy he vuelto a los recorridos por caminos. He estado por la La Fortuna, Venta la Rubia, Boadilla, Alcorcón, Leganés, etc. He hecho 43 Km muy tranquilo, por ir poniendo a prueba las calas. En las partes técnicas del recorrido (caminos estrechos con curvas, bajadas y subidas cortas y repentinas, trialeras, tramos muy arenosos, etc) no he tenido confianza porque no me da tiempo a preparar mis piernas sacándolas de los pedales. Pero todavía no me rindo.

Otra de mis bicicletas.
En realidad era la bicicleta de mi pareja, pero ella se compró una bicicleta eléctrica y ahora la uso yo, salgo algunas veces a pasear o hacer tramos cortos con esta cómoda Orbea. Creo recordar que esta bicicleta es del año 2003 ó 2004 aproximadamente. Es una clásica bicicleta urbana de cuadro bajo. El cuadro y todos sus elementos son de aluminio, tiene frenos en U, ruedas de 700x35C, cuadro rígido, dinamo para alimentar sus luces, etc.

Hoy he recorrido 54 Km por carril bici con mi MTB. Ya sé que es poco provechosa la MTB en este tipo de terreno, pero me gusta mucho la geometría de mi bicicleta. Aunque quizás acondicione mi vieja bicicleta Sirla para que parezca una gravel y pueda usarla en los recorridos urbanos. Por otro lado sigo poniendo a prueba mis calas, voy ganando experiencia con ellas.

En el período que la tuvo él le cambió la potencia, el manillar, y las manetas de frenos para hacerla más cómoda y urbana. También le puso un sillín más blando. Además, inexplicablemente, le cambió sus fabulosas llantas de aluminio por unas llantas mediocres de hierro (de la tienda Decathlon).
Cuando mi padre falleció me traje la bicicleta de nuevo para casa, pero la he usado poco. No quiero deshacerme de ella porque es un gran recuerdo.

Un pequeño homenaje a esta bicicleta, que fue mi primera bicicleta de adulto. Es una bicicleta de marca SIRLA, fabricada en Portugal, y que compré en Mérida en 1990 en Repuestos Sainz. Originalmente era bicicleta de carreras, pero fue transformada por mi padre, en unos años que estuvo en su poder, en bicicleta urbana.
Antes de esto yo le había cambiado ambos desviadores (que no recuerdo bien si eran de marca LUSITO) por unos estupendos SHIMANO 105. También le cambié el cassette, y me arrepentí de la combinación de piñones que me pusieron los cuales son muy de llanear. El cassette original era muy versátil, desde llanear hasta montaña.
Por último le puse cierre rápido en ambos ejes, que no tenía originalmente.

Mi conclusión de hoy es que para este tipo de recorridos fáciles, o incluso de carretera, son muy adecuadas las calas. En cambio, no me imagino con ellas en recorridos técnicos por caminos donde hay que estar prestos a bajar un pie u otro o hacer evoluciones rápidas, saltos, etc... Quizás esta conclusión esté influenciada por mi poca experiencia con las calas... no sé, seguiré comentando el uso de las calas sobre nuevos recorridos.

- la segunda vez ha sido hoy. He acoplado en la bota calas shimano del tipo sm-sh55, y en la bici he puesto pedales Shimano M-324 SPD Mixtos con ajuste muy flojo para sacar la bota con facilidad (es mi primer uso con calas). Los pies han estado calientes con una temperatura ambiente de 5°C.

Al ser mi primera vez he escogido un recorrido de carril bici/paseo fácil, y he ido aprendiendo por el camino a extraer y volver a enganchar las botas en los pedales. La verdad es que con el ajuste que he hecho no era difícil sacar las botas.
