  2. Good day to all this #GreenFriday aka #BuyNothingDay!

Looking forward to doing what I do most days and not buying anything unnecessarily. 😊

Anyone still falling in to the #BlackFriday trap remember that 98% of Black Friday 'offers' are no cheaper than they are normally. 🚨

What's more, if you bought from Amazon last year you helped them to suck out £575 million from the UK economy in lost taxes from their #TaxAvoidance. 🤯

Coulda paid for 23,504 nurses! 🏥
    Or 14,808 doctors. 👩‍⚕️
    Or 17,012 teachers. 👨‍🏫
Or 2 million winter fuel payments. 💷
Or half a million weeks of adult residential nursing care. 🛌
Or 3256 new social homes. 🏡

  4. For years, I have been criticizing over-consumption.
Have you heard about "Buy Nothing Day"? In North America, the United Kingdom, Finland and Sweden, Buy Nothing Day is held the day after U.S. Thanksgiving, concurrent with Black Friday. Elsewhere, it is held the following day, which is also the last Saturday of November. So in Germany, it's on Saturday, November 29.

  6. I'm participating in the economic blackout this Friday February 28, but it won't be just one day. I'm going for at least a week, ideally a month, maybe even longer. I will allow a few exceptions: groceries (from Aldi), medication, things from small/local businesses, bills, and charitable donations. Let's see how long I can go. #BuyNothingDay #BuyLocal #ChallengeAccepted #boycott

  7. Black Friday’s Carbon Cost

Nothing to see here, keep buying! 👀

Last year’s estimated carbon cost from Black Friday equated to 429,000 tonnes of CO2 admitted into the atmosphere from product deliveries alone.

    – The same as over 4 billion miles driven by an average gasoline-powered car.

And then returned items bought during the sales used over 1.2 billion gallons of diesel and emitted 12 million metric tonnes of CO2 in the US alone. 🤦

  8. Amazon’s £433 MILLION 1yr Black Hole

According to latest estimates, Amazon’s corporation tax avoidance could have cost UK citizens around £433 million in lost taxes in 2023 alone.

£433 million could be used to recruit:

  9. Buy Now, Bin Tomorrow!

It is estimated that 80% of electronics and clothing bought on Black Friday, plus the plastic packaging they are wrapped in, end up in landfill, incineration, or low-quality recycling after a very short life. 🤦

    Better to avoid Amazon

  10. The demise of God left open the question of meaning, the function of theodicy, in the modern world. Here, @ProfTimJackson argues that some part of this function has become internalised within consumerism itself. → cusp.ac.uk/themes/aetw/blog_tj #postgrowth #degrowth cc #BlackFriday #BlockFriday #BuyNothingDay #Consumerism

  12. Imported marketing bollocks is certainly not on MY mind. This US phenomenon is not relevant to #australia - why should we get all lathered up into a #consumerist frenzy?

Why do #Australians have to slavishly copy US consumerist culture?
