  2. Just gotten around to replacing these two flaky 1TB SATA TimeTec SSDs from my server.

With just 121TBW (quite low for 1TB drive), it has degraded to the point that sustained writes are slower than a cheapo USB 3.0 Flash Drive at 13.8MB/s instead of the advertised 400MB+/s.

    Absolute Junk!

The reason I even gave these a chance is because they had a reputation, their RAM Sticks work very well and are 100% stable, and their SSDs seem to work fine for the first year or so, until they don't work super well at all!

I'm going to ensure to continue phasing out this brand from my systems.

  3. This is your yearly reminder to be careful with Black Friday purchases.

Many places have cheap crap specifically made for Black Friday. If it seems too good to be true, it is.

Ask me about my dead JVC TV.

  4. eContent Pro International Press is confused.
    researchinformation.info/news/

It says it's “the first U.S.-based book publisher to operate exclusively under a #platinum #OpenAccess publishing model."

But it also says that "the open access processing charges that offset the publication costs are funded by individuals, sponsoring institutions, grants, and so on" and that it's "committed to offering some of the lowest Book Processing Charges (#BPCs) in the industry."

  5. Google chromecasts loosing audio is not a bug, is planned obsolescence because they want you to buy the new and more expensive device... Reposts are encouraged!

[UPDATE] They have been borked for a month and they have stated that "they are working on a solution" pshhh yeah right!

  6. Ok so... This is an "interesting" flipping scam. (As if I didn't have enough to worry about.)

I ordered an emergency radio from NewEgg because I am trying so hard to avoid Amazon.

It arrived today. From Amazon. As a "gift." (The product box inside was smashed, and there's a rattle, so I suspect the radio is broken even.)

The price of the radio on Amazon is $32.

    I paid $59 to NewEgg.

I can return it to Amazon for an Amazon gift card. For $32.

I guess now I have a new thing to do today, which is to figure out if I can report this to NewEgg, get a refund, and get this seller pwned. NewEgg Seller = Orange Techno Store. I have no reason to believe they have any relation to the Amazon seller.

Then I have to find a different radio.

    Effing A.

  8. One of the greatest failings of the early #economic #philosophers, was their failure to foresee the impact of de-personalizing #markets.

Back in Smith's time there was an assumption of #honesty on the part of the seller. Markets were small enough that dishonesty would be punished by #buyers not buying the dishonest #sellers #goods.

#Trust is the bedrock of thriving markets. Which is why countries with rigid rules of law and enforcement do better than countries without. You can trust that if you get burned -- there's a #remedy.

But as markets expanded, so did de-personalization. See the "traveling salesman" selling #SnakeOil for example. Burn a bunch of people -- then move on to the next set of dupes.

Add then, the advent of marketing, or as I like to call it, #CapitalistPropaganda. In short, the practice of increasing demand by selling lies -- #BuyerBeware.

Add to that, legal precedent interpreting lies as free speech -- buyer beware.

Add then, #monopoly power, and it's impossible not to see where this is headed.

Today, we have markets of *distrust* because everyone is peddling legal lies.

    Give it a name: #PredatoryCapitalism? #CrisisCapitalism? #Conitalism?

It's all the logical end result of rewarding those with the most capital to compete without rules governing the sale of #lies.

  9. Adding an item you're interested in buying to an Amazon wishlist lets you to see if the price drops and by how much.

I've noticed Amazon will often say a product is on sale when it's the same price it always has been.

This item has been $13.95 for months, but now says it's 27% off, limited time deal.

This is designed to make you think you're getting a deal when you're not, and to create a false sense of urgency to buy the item while it's "on sale".

  10. If you are looking to nab yourself a used MacBook Pro on eBay, arm yourself with knowledge before dipping your toes in the clearly toxic waters. While eBay has always been a hotbed of fraudulent seller activity and creative ways of screwing peeps out of their money, these resellers have found ways to take it to a new, disturbing level. Luke Miani breaks it all down in ways that make sense and give you the tools you need. #apple #Mac #MacBook #ebay #fraud #buyerbeware youtube.com/watch?v=5V6Pez_Dbz

  11. That Pedal Show on YouTube released a new episode yesterday and it is about 90 minutes exclusively on the Gibson Firebird.

I haven’t quite watched all of it yet, but I’m down to the last few minutes.

Seriously… for the good of society (as well as my bank account) please… whatever you do… don’t let me go near a music store for a few days at least. If I walk into a Guitar Center (or something similar) I am absolutely not going to be able to stop myself and I am 100% walking out of that store with a Firebird.

For the love of all that is good in this universe, don’t let me go into a music store.

  12. An #Ottawa couple is sharing their #BuyerBeware story & importance of reading the fine print in contracts, following a shocking #PriceHike & #InterestRate adjustment for their home furnace financing.

In 2018, Sonya Rawlings and her husband, James, replaced their furnace, hot water tank & air conditioner, spending $17,000, financed through a company called #ProvincialHomeAssistance.

The trouble began in June 2024, when the #loan was renewed by a third company, #Financeit.

"Our interest rate jumped from 2.99% to 14.99% & our payment went from $60 a month to $136 a month," says Rawlings. "It's a shock. It's kind of like robbery. It's more than double the amount we were paying before."

Closer examination of the #financing details revealed the loan's original 10-year #amortization had been extended to 20 years by the second lender.

  13. I’m always interested in how bike companies are adding financing as an option for their customers. I saw a Citizens Pay ad (which I had never heard of) for Trek’s online store with “0% financing”. So I clicked through and found this buried really deep in the fine print… 29.99% APR on purchases “after the promotional period”. This kind of predatory lending should be illegal. #BuyerBeware #TrekBikes #CitizensPay #CitizensBank #PersonalFinance #ebike #PredatoryLending #BikeTooter

  15. Be advised that if you ever have to order anything from CabinetParts.com, and then need to return your order, you're only going to get 1/4th of your money back, if that. Their re-stocking fee is apparently over 90% of whatever you ordered. #BuyerBeware

  16. So apparently people who decide they don't want to stay on Threads found out the hard way that deleting a Threads account also deletes their Instagram account.
